Favorite Rome Accomodations
 

I have been scouring the forums and the rest of the web for a hotel in Rome for a family of 4. Its been pretty tough finding something that fits all our needs. There actually isnt too much info on this forum on this topic so I thought I'd start a thread. We want to stay in the historic district. We'd like breakfast included. Wifi is not mandatory but would be helpful.

Use this thread to post your favorite Rome accommodations - better yet if you stayed in a room with more than 2 people. Tripadvisor seems to not be a great source for Rome. The rankings seem to have no meaning!!

You need to state a budget. Are you wanting two rooms or a quad?

Id rather have a quad because it will be cheaper. But if I can get 2 connecting rooms for a great price that gives us more space that would be perfecto!!

Budget Considerations - 250 - 280 EUROS A NIGHT.
For the one quad or 2 doubles or anything that works for the family of 4 (kids - boys 8 and 11.)

Its going to be 5 nights so I really want to love what we pick.

Well, actually accommodations in Rome is a big topic on this board. How long are you planning to stay? Have you considered an apartment? Breakfast is normally kind of a croissant, bread, coffee and juice. You may find one that has a buffet with scrambled eggs from several hours earlier and some limp bacon.

We posted at about the same time. For 5 nights, you can get a really good apartment for less than you budget, which would give you lots left over other things.

I'm partial to apartments and normally stay in them when in Rome, but on some occasions I have stayed in hotels outside of the city and used either buses or trains to commute.

I'd recommend that you consider an apartment - you should be able to easily find one that sleeps 4 comfortably within your budget. Breakfast not included, but you can shop and cook in your own kitchen. Search "Rome apartment" here for lots of ideas. After a lot of research, I recently booked an apartment for the spring with this agency, but I have not yet stayed there, so cannot definitively review. http://www.rome-accom.com/

I have stayed in the Due Torri, The Del Senato, the Margutta, and the Campo de Fiore. By far, the Del Senato is the best, although the Due Torri has the best breakfast. We loved them both, but the Margutta and the Campo de Fiore were forgettable.

If you're nervous about being "on your own" in an apartment, someplace like the Palazzo Olivia might be a good compromise: http://www.palazzo-olivia.it/en/apar...apartments.php It's gotten generally good reviews, and as I recall, the owner lives on site. They also offer various other hotel-like services at an extra charge, should you so choose.

Albergo Santa Chiara has a family room that would work for you. It is behind the Pantheon so located right in the center. Not sure if they include breakfast or wifi.

Ok - so I think everyone has convinced me to book an apartment. Now to immerse myself in learning all there is to know about rentals....

It is in a great location and within your budget. However, your younger kid should be careful on the stairs up to the kitchen. And it's on the 4th Italian floor with no elevator (although they appeared to be adding an elevator when we stayed).

Well, hold on. I've put clients into the family room at Albergo Santa Chiara, and would do so again for a family of four.

I do believe breakfast is included, and I'm sure you can check their website or send an email about wifi.

Our last apartment in Rome did not have wifi, but it was gorgeous. It was tiny, super clean and chic, in a fabulous location, but with a rental guy that would just as soon have hit us rather than be nice.

I love Rome, but I don't find it the easiest place to be. I don't always think an apartment is best for people visiting a new and challenging city for the first time. That isn't the most popular thing to say here, but I believe it.

How is your Italian? Staying in an apartment can possibly require a few more language skills and a bit more understanding of how things work in foreign parts.

The Accetti apartment sees very nice and sunny.The location and the price is Super.I will keep it in mind.

E-mail The San Carlo. Ask for a quote on a quadruple room. It should be less than your budget, depending upon when you'll be there.

Although they do have a continental breakfast included in the room price, they also have packaged snacks available (at breakfast) for you to take with you and eat throughout the day.

It is fairly popular, so you should be able to find online reviews both here at fodor's, slowtravel, tripadvisor, etc.

We had a triple and a double, but I don't think they had quad rooms. It is a B&B, in an old building but well-decorated in a clean and contemporary way. The owners are an American woman and her multilingual husband, and they were super helpful with everything from bus information to restaurants to...whatever! The location, Via Cavour, is a busy street, but it is close to the Roman Forum and the Coliseum. One of our rooms was on the street side, but the windows were double-paned and the street noise did not bother us. There was a good trattoria next door and good pizza down the street.

The bathrooms, at least in the triple room I was in, were very nice; ours had a tub which was much appreciated after long days of walking throughout Rome...

Friends who stayed there more recently said they now give you a voucher for breakfast at a neighboring cafe instead of delivering it to your room, so that is something to consider. There is internet connection.

The price for a double begins at 100 and goes up to 180, so whether or not this fits your price range will depend, I suppose, on your dates.

When in Roma, we ar very partial to The Hotel Modigliani. Web page tells all, but we have found it to be just the kind of quiet, well-locatd place to be in the city...walk to Spanish Steps, Trevi, Pza. Navona, Fiori, short bus or metro ride to Coliseum and Forum. The street (Purficacion) is usually pretty free of autos, and Via Veneto is around the corner. My daughter and her family have been back twice and some friends of ours now tout it like we do. They have triples and quads, elevator, excellent full buffet breakfast.

Albergo Santa Chiara wants 325 euros a night for the quad - ouch!! Still working on the apartments - back and forth with Sleep in Italy to find the right fit.
Its tough to pick from so many apartment choices - but I am looking forward to having a lot of space and having a kitchen to keep snacks, drinks, and create our own breakfasts!

BTW, The San Carlo does have small refrigerators in each room, which they replenish daily with bottles of water at no additional charge. (And they don't mind if you put other things in the refrigerator.)
