I'll be visiting some of these same towns... Would love to hear recommendations.

You will likely get more/better response if you re-post w/ a better title, and include at minimum "Spain". "Favorite restaurants requested" could be asking about anyplace in Europe.

Highly atmospheric restaurants:
* TOLEDO. "La Abadía" at Plaza de San Nicolás.
* GRANADA. "Mirador de Morayma" at the Albaicín quarter. Great views.
* SEVILLA. "Patio de San Eloy" at Calle San Eloy # 9. Tapas restaurant.
* CÁCERES. "La Torre de Sande" at Calle Los Condes. Historical building.
* SEGOVIA. "Casa Cándido" at Plaza del Azoguejo, close to the Aqueduct. Delicious roast suckling pig.

Segovia--Narizotas at Plaza de Medina del Campo, 1. Get "the left hand"--too much food, but totally amazing!

amsdon Mar 19th, 2008 06:06 AM

GBC will you be driving in to the sourrounding areas too? Or just the actual cities named?

GBC Mar 19th, 2008 01:55 PM

Hi

Our sincere appreciation goes out to ekscrunchy, Revulgo, and artlover who shared some of their favorites. We will put them on our list and try very hard to look them up as we travel.

This is a first trip to Spain and Portugal. We arrive MAD on Wednesday AM and proceed directly to Toledo. From there we travel clockwise, ending in Madrid.

We will have a (very expensive rental) car and twenty eight nights. We're explorers and I'm sure that we'll wander from the toll roads - especially if there is some art, historical sights, a pretty garden, or good food to be found. That said, there is an awful lot of 'stuff' to include and our reservations are complete in the locations noted. (There is a similar post for Portugal but, alas, no feedback there.)

Again, thanks to you, Fodorites.

Well if that is the case be SURE to read the link from Scrunchy in detail. If you can get to Pedraza try Yantar, specializing in suckling lamb she mentioned it there. Delicious!

Vey near there (less than 15 minutes drive) is another restaurant, Restaurante Codex Calixtinus, which we loved. Really beautiful restaurant earthy and peaceful, fine dining Michelin Star qualtiy. http://www.restaurante-calixtinus.es/

Also I agree w/Artlover Narizotas is a good and different kind of place for a very nice meal in Segovia too, but not so much the roast pig alternatives to that.

I've been searching the map and have located the little villages of Pedraza and Canicosa - both near Segovia. The restaurants sound great. Thanks, more searching to do.

When Amsdon asked if you would have a car, I knew that her thoughts were directed toward Pedraza! There is no way that you should miss a lunch in this town if you plan to be in Segovia. If El Yantar will be closed when you are there (they are not open every weekday) then you must drive to Sepulveda and have the lamb at Tinin in that town, which is also very picturesque. Maribel has much information in her Segovia guide:

www.maribel.com

This is food that merits driving long distances!

amsdon Mar 20th, 2008 03:29 PM

You know me too well Scrunchy!

By the way GCB, the distances appeared so much greater and more daunting on the map than they were in reality. The drive from Pedraza to Canicosa was approx 7/10 minutes in the pouring rain, mind you.

These areas are very beautiful but very tranquil and quiet midweek, if you are looking for lots of people go on the weekend.

Or did GBC already leave for Spain?
Lucky! ((#))

No, still in the USA. We depart Tuesday late for our overnight flight.

You folks have been very kind. We both appreciate it. I promise to report back upon our return.

Hi GBC,

I just came across your post so if it isn't too late. I have many recs for Nerja, which has a lot of good restaurants.

If you like Italian, Dolce Vita and Dal Toscana are our favorites. Au Petit Paris is always good. California is great for steaks. White Truffle is a good restaurant. Nice Spanish restaurants are Pepe Rico and The Old Cellar.

I could go on but I think that is enough for a start.

Have a wonderful trip!
