Ah ha! Thanks so much, Rex. I knew you would respond. I'm headed there (the threads, not the city) now, and my friend and her DH will be there for a week in January. Their travel budget dwarfs mine, so I know they will sample the best. (not that money spent equals quality, but you know what I mean.) J.

You're welcome - - and no, there is no "techno-cool" way to keep a thread "up" in the visibility, other than topping it (as far as I know).

I've actually been a little bit surprised that no one else has jumped on this with current recommendations - - perhaps because some of the threads that I cited were quite recent.

jmw44, It has to be topped to stay at the top of the list, but you can find it anytime you want to just by clicking on your name in blue at the top of the screen. This will bring up any thread you have started or posted on.

Thanks all. As I mentioned, I'm seeking recommendations for a friend and her husband, who will spend a week in Rome in early January. She has been "wishing for this trip her whole life", so any really special restaurants you'd care to add will be appreciated. She's a gourmet and a fine wine aficionado, and a wonderful person besides, so all her friends are hoping her trip with her hubby will be memorable. J.

Any thoughts on Piperno. I have reservations for the end of December. The last two times I was in Rome it was closed, so I'm hoping the the carciofi (sp?) are worth it.

We were in Rome last May for about 5 days. We went to Piperno...I didn't love it. The ambience is great but the food was only so so. Had better carciofi at Da Gigetto in the Ghetto. We had a fabulous lunch at a mozzarella bar "Obika" which is about a five minute walk from Giolitti Gelateria.

My favorite is the intimate, small Grappolo D'Oro in the Campo Dei Fiori district in Rome. However, it's gotten so popular over the years that I fear there is a wait for a table, if not reservations needed! Also, I like L'Orso 80, up north of the Pantheon area.
