Favorite Restaurant in Venice

We are looking for charming atmosphere and great food (hard not to get there, I know) and/or a little known treasure of a place to eat.

Poppa Aug 27th, 2003 06:31 AM

Corte Sconta
Alla Testiere
Vino da Gigio

There is plenty of great food in Venice.

For atmosphere and cheaper eats, try "Alla Rivetaa," in Castello.

Poppa Aug 27th, 2003 06:32 AM

Sorry!

The top 3 may be called "charming" in the sense of ambience (for some) but Alla Rivetta is happy and active with diners jammed in at long tables and making friends right and left.

If that sounds good, you could give it a try.

They ALL sound good. Thanks for the recommendations.

If you had to choose one restaurant in Venice for a splurge, where would it be?

Given the weak dollar, I am scaling back plans for Dining Out in Italy.

Further suggestions welcomed!

I second the motion for Alle Testiere. Excellent food and charming service.

Cheers,
Jan

My splurge would be the terrace restaurant at Hotel Cipriani.

My first trips to Venice included dinners at Da Fiore & Al Covo.
On my last visit I listened to the Venetians & went to:
Anitico Panificio (best pizza & homemade 'pastierei' for dessert
Al Zucca....great inventive food & cozy surroundings, reasonable prices...three visits weren't enough!

For a splurge?
L'OSTERIA DI SANTA MARINA....we even purchased the a gift certificate for our Venetian friends.....it was a first!!

A third vote for Alle Testiere. It is small so reservations are necessary. I believe there are two seatings (7:30 and 9:30, I think.)

Sorry to pirate this thread, but are there any good places for those who do not eat seafood? (allergy)

I've been to Venice before, but did not have a decent meal, sadly. The beef was terrible.

Holly_uncasdewar Dec 10th, 2003 10:49 AM

Bailey - where is Antico Panificio located???

Italy4me Dec 10th, 2003 11:08 AM

For a great beefsteak in Venice, try Osteria da Alberto in Canareggio near the church of Santa Maria di Miracoli.

For my splurge meal, I'd go to Corte Sconta - but you have to love seafood!

rialtogrl Dec 10th, 2003 08:59 PM

Mamma love, there are some good places for non-seafood eaters in Venice. Osteria da Alberto is one. Da Sandro in Rialto has great steak. La Zucca in Santa Croce doesn't serve fish at all - only meats and pastas.

Koshka, I'd say for a splurge, da Fiore, Antiche Carampane, or Corte Sconte. But there are lots of places that you can eat almost as well for a fraction of the price. What is a splurge to you?

Hi Momma,

Can you eat fish? At Cantinone Storico, I had tuna carpaccio, seafood risotto and Sea Bass.

AlanM1 Dec 11th, 2003 07:22 AM

One of our favorites is Il Gondolieri located not far from the Accademia Bridge in the Dorsoduro district. It was recommended by a local and also is known for its meat dishes. We have had two wonderful meals there and were the only Americans in the restaurant.

Aha, someone found il Cantinone storico...
A very good no nonsense restaurant indeed.

Mamma_Love Dec 11th, 2003 07:56 AM

Thanks for the replies and great reccommendations! I truly appreciate it!

rialtogrl: no, I cannot eat even fish. :( I wish I could, sometimes it looks soooo good.

Bailey Dec 11th, 2003 08:48 AM

Holly,
Antico Panificio:
Sa Polo 945 A-B
just off Campo San Aponal
(San Silvestro vaporetto stop)
041 277 09 67

Don't forget to save room for dessert...ask if they have Caprese or Pastiere...(divine) It wasn't listed on the menu, but they had it.....also try BOTH the red/white fragolino....an Italian outlaw wine!!

rialtogrl Dec 11th, 2003 10:03 AM

Ira - I have heard such good things about Cantinone Storico - must try it on the next trip.

Momma, someone here mentioned Ai Gondolieri - they have an incredible steak with Barolo sauce. Yum.
