For long weekends in the UK, Snowdonia and the area around there in Wales is pretty and our kids had fun there. Shannon/SW Ireland, just beautiful. We had a really nice long weekend there, although for the kids, it was a little heavy on the "scenic drive" factor.
We've been to Lausanne and Lucerne Switzerland. I'd love to go back to Lucerne. Our strategy a few times was to check ryanair and easyjet and go wherever was cheapest... maybe it's someplace offbeat but when it costs only (say) $75 to fly an entire family somewhere, you can take the chance! |
see_the_world7, we lived in Beaconsfield, Bucks (halfway between London and Oxford), in the early 80's and loved it. If you are ever in that area, you must take the kids to Bekonscot. Here is a quote from the town's website (www.beaconsfield.co.uk):
Tourist Attractions: Beaconsfield’s most famous tourist attraction is its legendary model village. Situated right in the heart of Beaconsfield’s New Town, Bekonscot is the oldest and most well renowned model village in the world. The village opens its doors in February each year and remains open right through until December. Also of interest: The Royal Standard of England is also a popular destination for tourists. Located just a mile from the centre of the New Town, the pub is reported to be the oldest Free House in England. It also played host to Charles I during the Civil War. Odds Farm, a popular rare breeds farm, is also within a couple of miles of the town. You could maybe combine this with a visit to Windsor Castle. |
I'm a huge fan of Croatia. Of the 20 or so countries I've visited in Europe it is by far my favorite. It's just a gorgeous country with friendly people, decent food and stunning views.
Also love the Berchtesgaden area and will be returning in April. Beautiful! The Salzkammergut is equally wonderful and nearby. Tracy |
