Just returned from Austria and Switzerland and I have to say that Lake Wolfgang in Austria near Salzburg was striking and also being 10,000 ft. on top of snowy icy Gonergrat surrounded by towering mountains and seeing the mist start to break away from the Matterhorn is unbelievably beautiful.
In Italy, a tremendous view is from atop Anacapri looking down on the water and rocks of the island of Capri.
On the French Riviera a gorgeous view of St. Jean Cap Ferrat and other areas looking down from the coastline atop the Grande Corniche.

The experience of hairpin turns and sheer dropoffs as a passenger on the mandatory special buses that run up to the mountains to Berchtesgaden in Germany to see the Eagles Nest. The views are incredible!
Also loved the fairytale countryside of Denmark.

Glencoe in Scotland in the rain, Glencoe in the mist, Glencoe in the sun, Glencoe with snow - and what's more - you can get all of that in about 1 hour if you time it right.

The dolomites are well worth the trek as is anywhere in the Alsp, but the most unforgetable natural site had to be the Cuillins in Skye as seen from Elgol on a sunny day.

- The view from the mountain trails in Val Fex down toward Sils Maria and Maloja, Switzerland;
- The cliffs on the Atlantic coast just north of Cascais, Portugal;
- The sunset from the Crozon Peninsula in Brittany, France (sorry for bringing mankind into this, but the sunset from the fishing/art village of Camaret on this peninsula is equally great);
- 3ft of fresh snow greeting you in the early morning outside your hotel in Arosa, Switzerland.

You're right jw, no car "needed" - depends if you want the ultimate flexibility or not. And you're right about the vineyards... Just thought of a compromise: 3 days Zurich; take the Intercity train to Geneva (3 hrs. of cross-Swiss exposure, albeit some urban stuff but great landscapes around Bern and Fribourg; the bonus - you come out of that rather long tunnel high above the Lake of Geneva and BAM!, just as the train exits, I think it's at the village of Grand Vaux, you get the powerful view of the century down across the vineyards, through the lake and across to the French Alps. It reminds me of a French Impressionist painting...); and, whew, 2 days in Geneva.
