Dear SiobhanP,

The group is called Madredeus, and the soundtrack is from a film made in 1994 called Lisbon Story, directed by Wim Wenders.

CESARIA EVORA! Particularly her Voz d'Amor album. Beautiful laid-back music from the Capeverdian Islands.
And Patricia Kaas; the Piano Bar album.

A few:

For Paris:
Ultra Lounge - Bachelor in Paris - cool little collection.

For Italy:
Anything Dean (as in Martin) - I just heard "On an Evening in Roma" on the way in to work today.

For everywhere on Earth :
Come on, when you think Mood you think Moody as in Blues. I'm just thankful it's Friday morning here and not Tuesday afternoon. I'm ready for the weekend.

For a French mood, it's Paris Combo,
8 1/2 souvuneers, Stephan Grapelli, and of course Edith Piaff. For exotic tropics, I love Orchestra Baobab, a Sengalese group that does Cuban music. For other worldly, haunting music, listen to the Bulgarian Women'c Chior. And if I put on some good old Moonglows, Harptones and the Cadillacs, I'm back on a street corner in Jersey City harmonizing with the guys!

Statia : I once read something you posted on the Caribbean board and knew exactly where you were from. Lucky girl ! I've been visiting the island of St. Martin/Sint Maarten at least once every year since the mid 80's when in my teens and love all the surrounding islands (St. Barts, Anguilla, Saba, not yet Statia though, and further afield Antigua, St. Kitts and Barbuda) that I've visited many times. I've seen so many changes over the years and seen the changes differently as I've grown up. However, the beauty of the islands and the people never change. I have accumulated loads of local friends there now and look forward to seeing them each year. Enjoy a 'ti poonch for me today.

Merci for the clarification of ""Elle est partie", Marilyn. Guess I should've gotten "depart" from partie. Actually, it's not a sad song -- well, at least the tempo isn't sad; it's very upbeat -- so that's why I was assuming partie was "party". And since I don't understand the lyrics, you may be right in that, although he's saying "she has left", he may also be celebrating that fact, rather than bemoaning it.

Interestingly, I looked up the word "party" and discovered it's related to "left" (as in "depart/partition&quot and comes from partie (Middle English)...

Etymology: Middle English partie part, party, from Old French, from partir to divide.

Beatchick, "Je T'Aime...Moi Non Plus" doesn't appear to be on the soundtrack to French Kiss. Are you sure you aren't thinking of Addicted to Love, because it's on that soundtrack and Meg Ryan was in that film as well. French Kiss does have a good soundtrack, with "Via con Me" by Paolo Conte (who I got turned onto two years ago by our shuttle bus driver in Vernazza; he generously gave us a tape); "Someone Like You" by Van Morrison; "I Love Paris" by Ella Fitzgerald; and "Les Yeux Ouverts" by a band I'm sure you're familiar with, The Beautiful South.

Interestingly, both soundtracks contain a song by the group Negresses Vertes. On French Kiss, it's "Les Yeux de Ton Père" and on Addicted to Love it's "Comme Toujours."

Hmmmm...I've never seen Addicted to Love, Capo-san. So I don't know WHERE I've heard that song before. Hmmm... Maybe it's not on the soundtrack per se but in the movie itself???

Thanks Statia. You know just how to make me wish that I was there with plate of chicken and ribs, slaw, peas n'rice in one hand and a cold carib in the other, living the high life on the beach, don't you ?! I'm envious.

By the way Capo, I mean't to say this earlier to your posting (Statia distracted me...) but you have great taste in music. I have some of those tracks and couldn't agree more. I also like Charles Trenet to put one in a 'Paris' frame of mind.

I have a question about Italian pop music but will ask in a new thread.

Have a good weekend all.

Andrea Bocelli takes me away to Italy each and every time I listen to his music. 'Romanza' is my all-time favorite CD.

Merci, Mathieu. (And just for that nice comment, if you want to email me your address, I'd be happy to burn and send a custom compilation CD to you. [email protected])

You, in return, have great taste in "reality" TV shows. Just heard that the next Amazing Race is beginning in, I think, early July.

By the way, since you mentioned Trenet, he has a song, "Verlaine," on the French Kiss soundtrack. If you like being put in a Paris frame of mind, I couldn't recommend Malcolm McLaren's Paris album highly enough. The All Music Guide thinks it's horrible, but I think it's brilliant. I mean, who would've thought the guy who created and managed the Sex Pistols would ever put out an album like Paris?

>>"Elle est partie" means "She has left."<

N'inquietez-pas! Je suis retourne!

Oh, you didn't mean me? Desolee.

All I have to do to recapture the mood of driving (or taking the train) through Francis is put on Jeff Buckley's Grace. The songs from this CD are essential part of the soundtrack of one of my all time favorite French films, Ceux qui m'aime prenderont le train (Those Who Love Me Can Take the Train).

Also--Jane Birkin! With or without Serge. Especially "Ex-Fan des Sixties", which we kept hearing on the radio when we were in Provence a few years ago. Cracks me up everytime I hear it. Apparently, Jane is touring again. She's coming to Philadelphia in November and we have plans to go see her. Should be interesting.

Also, Miles Davis, Donald Byrd, Stephane Grapelli, Air, Les Nubians, and M.C. Solaar.

Although right now Sean Paul's "I'm so in love" (with Sasha) reminds me a lot of Paris because it was playing everywhere we went when we were there last month. So was "Hey Ya" (OutKast", but I have other memories and associations for that song.

Scarlett, in response to your question "Has anyone ever heard Natalie McMaster?" -- Absolutely! (She reminds you of Scotland, but she is actually from the New World version -- Nova Scotia -- where there is fabulous and vibrant musical tradition.)

I actually thought this initially said "Food Music"... so my first thought that also applies to travel mood is:

-The Big Night soundtrack with cheesy Louis Prima songs.

I also agree with a pp about a group called
Madredeus, a fado group with a singer with an absolutely haunting voice. The cd "Ainda" was playing while I ate dinner in Florence at Pane e Vino.. it was superb.I have since bought their compilation CD which is even better but I can't recall the name right now.

For Italian and French pop music or house music, I log into one of the itnernet radio stations to take me there.

There's also Eros Ramazzotti and Zucchero that can instantly transport me back to Italy.

And Les Nubiens, French R&B.

Other good standbys...
Buena Vista Social Club
Andrea Bocelli Sogno

And a GREAT CD I just love is the European soundtrack to Bend it like Beckham.

Okay, okay, so I should have done a little editing before posting.

How do you make the diacritical marks in your posts, anyway?

Just ribbing you. J'aime typos! Très amusement.

I'm sure there are keystrokes you can use, but I get mine from translations on the Babel Fish website...
