Favorite Inexpensive Restaurants Prague
 

We will be in Prague the 2nd week of June for 5 nights. We are staying in an apartment in the Mala Strana area.

Can you please recommend some reasonably priced restaurants?

We would also like to know about some pubs with character that are fun to visit.

David is not cheap, but it is worth every penny. Definitely the best "foodie" restaurant in Prague. $100 for two, with a bottle of Czech wine.

When we were in Prague we had a great value meal at the U SADLU restaurant, a realy great value place to eat.

Another pub that served great food was the 3 black Roses its near the castle.
Quite a small traditional pub, the food is gorgeous and the beer is even better.

Anyplace that serves sausage--I swear I've tried every different brand possible in the states and nothing tastes as good as sausage in CZ.

Yea! Now we're talking! Muck, U Sadlu looks fantastic! Just the kind of place we are looking for. Very atmosheric, interesting food and great prices.

USADLU and 3 Black Roses are definately on our list to try.

I have been to Prague a few times and i'm a big fan of eating at the local bar/pubs. Just look for the Pilsner Urquell signs, go in order yourself a pivo and some goulash.

We had a fabulous meal at Olympia which was recommended on this board. I think it's in Mala Strana and we walked on Kampa Island from the metro station. The meal was great and it's also a pub. I think we paid about $15 each.

On Kampa Island (just under the Charles Bridge) try the 14 Kampa (or maybe it's 15). Wonderful ambiance,food and service. The strudle is beautifully served and delicious. Dinner will be $20 each or less. A few doors down is a bright yellow building with a very nice restaurant serving a reasonably priced typical Czech menu. Their sausage is excellent and they have a nice outdoor serving area on the river. Also try the Mucha restaurant. It is also about $20 per person or less and has an upscale feel with tuxedoed waiters and a large attractive space. It is on the right hand side of the narrow street that will be directly before you as you stand with your back to the astronomical clock. Continue past the Mucha until the cross street that has the street vendor set up. Cross to the left and walk down that street (away from the vendors) looking in store windows until you see what appears to be a cafeteria - the cashier is at the front door. This cafeteria is perhaps the least expensive sit down place to eat in Old Town. We all stuffed ourselves for about $3 each including beer. Not high cuisine but hearty and filling - just make sure to get the hot items last. There is also a terrific inexpensive steak house about 2-3 blocks off the Old Town square. I will get back to you with the name. If you like a vegetarian menu, the Country Life is very good. It is run by a Seventh Day Adventist group. It is on the same street as the Mucha in the direction of the square.

In Vysherad (south of the touristy area) there are a lot of pretty casual, traditional czech restaurants, where you can get 3 courses with drinks for about $10 US. Only problem is they often don't have English menus, so you just have to kind of guess (worked well enough, but I may have just gotten lucky, and I had a friend with me who spoke a little Czech).

To follow up on my earlier post as promised. The steakhouse is called the Kozicka. It is on Kozi street, near the Old Town square. All four in our group agreed that the food was terrific and the prices were very reasonable, approaching cheap for what you got. The restaurant is in a basement pub. The street that the Mucha restaurant and Country life vegetarian restaurant is on is called Melantrichove. The ultra cheap cafeteria is called Ceska Kuchyne and is on Husova street. It is connected to a restaurant of a different name next door, but they are actually one place.

Kozicka, Ceska Kuchyne and Olympia all sound like budget restaurants that we would really enjoy.

Have a great time. It's a magical city. If you can fit it into your budget, the 14 Kampa is really exceptional in every respect. In the evening, take the steps down from the Charles Bridge and sit for awhile on a park bench facing the river on Kampa Island. Wonderful view.
