Favorite "cafe culture" towns in Italy?

So what are your favorite towns in Italy, to enjoy the "cafe culture". To me, this means, light shopping (mom and pop), people watch, enjoy the scenery, and of course sip espresso and watch the world go by?

I don't think by any means, these towns need to be hip or trendy--just fun interesting places to be without rushing from museum, to museum, or trying to take in all the attractions.

everyone of the zillions i've been - they are all great for this as it's endemic in Italian culture to sip a latte or people watch!

Though I probably spend a part of each day in museums or at tourist sites when in Rome, almost as much time goes by while sitting at a cafe in the late afternoon and evening.

Espresso, maybe a glass of grappa. Gelato for the kid, limoncello for madame.

I have a particular favorite in the old town but I won't say where. Almost choked one day when Barbara Harrison wrote it up, but luckily no one else seems to have read the article.

Good question:
Three came to mind that may surprise you.
Palermo---the new city area--a real cafe society !
Bassano del Grappa--I like this town.
Lucca---a very civilized medium sized town

Hi Whine..my absolute favorite would be on the antique street in Congeliano which is is the region of Veneto. But the Piazza Della Popolo in Ravenna runs a second best. And on a terrace overlooking the pretty little river in a real tiny place called Cavalri, just inland a few miles from the coastline of Ligure.

Actually you could plop me at any cafe in Italy I will have a smile on my face!
