Favorite airplane food to bring with you ?

This will be my first 10+ hour flight in a long, long, long time and since I heard that you don't get served food anymore, I was wondering what to bring. What are your favorite food/snacks that you bring on a long flight? I thought about bringing a sandwich in a little cooler bag with a small ice pack - what do you think?

I would have thought that the airline would feed you for a 10hr+ flight

You get serve food on all Trans-Atlantic flights on all major airlines. In fact, twice each way.

I never bring any outside food.

I don't rely on the plane food. Even if provided, it's often inedible.

However, I don't want to carry a cooler bag. I bring cheese and crackers, dried fruit, nuts, and other things that are fine without refrigeration. Sometimes I'll pick up a sandwich at the airport.

You will be fed, but I always take along something in case I get the munchies. Dried cherries, cashews and M&Ms make a good mix.

On my KLM flight to Paris (9 hours or so), the food was very good....it was very american on the way going....and very parisian on the way back. I totally loved it!

The breakfast can be a bit odd, but other than that, maybe take some trail mix or something that wont spoil.

Twizzlers...strawberry.

FYI, I believe it's a requirment that you be fed on long trips (multiple meals and snacks as well depending on the length of the flight). Some airlines have better meals than others, but I've found that after a couple of drinks it's easier to get the "stuffed salmon with red sauce" down the ol' windpipe.

Bon appetit!

I always bring a good-sized bottle of water with me (not a jug, but no skimpy 12 ounces either). Planes are really dehydrating, and no matter how often the flight attendants pass with the drinks cart, it's never enough! Besides, this frees you up to ask for something other than water when they do come by. Keeping hydrated definitely helps with the jet lag, too.

I bring small carrot sticks, grapes, an apple and usually a granola bar or two.

I bring a couple of whole wheat pita breads, an apple, carrot or celery sticks, some unsalted nuts, and a HUGE bottle of water. Dehydration is a major contributor to feeling "jet lagged" so the more hydrated you stay, the better you will feel

If you ask for water, do they give you bottled water, or pour from a carafe? Thanks.

Usually they pour a little cup (and i do mean little!) from a big bottle of Evian or some other bottled water.

I always ask them for two cups of water, or a cup of water and one of something else because I get so tired of drinking water! If you're going to be a real purist, avoid caffeine and alcohol, too. I can usually abstain from the poor excuse they call coffee on a plane and have a really good cup at my destination - but a little liquor really helps with the boredom of that sardine can in the sky!

I had read somewhere that you shouldn't drink the water from open containers on an airplane because it's possible that they refilled it with airplane tap, which is not always healthy. I have been on planes where they have cans of water I think I'll bring a big bottle of crystal geyser gt;

- pretzels (travel well and can live in my bag after I arrive)
- Deli sandwich (usually Subway since one convenient) - I eat on the plane. I don't bother to take a cooler bag since I eat in a few hours of purchasing. sandwiches are 'comfort' food for me.
- lifesavers or tictacs for that yucky "I've just been on the plane all night" taste.
- water
- ginger ale. Sometimes I need a little 'sugar' in my system, but can't stomach (ha!) caffeine. Usually use this as we are arriving in the am and any other food is repulsive to me.

bottom line: take your comfort food, what you take when tired, hung over, need something if tired and weary...

Evian or tap-ion?

Here is an interesting article about water onboard an airplane:

Just something to think about...

Yes, definitely comfort food - need to make yourself as comfortable as possible!

I've heard and even sometimes seen the same thing about the water onboard being from their tap - it's one of those stories the local news always pulls out during sweeps. If you're concerned, you want to watch them open one of those bottles in front of you and hear the snap of the seal being broken; if it's in a pitcher it's suspect.

Crystal Geyser - that's Cali water, right? Funny how water is still so regional...

Yes, that's why I want bottled water.
