Fastest way to renew passport
I posted this on "travel tips" forum but since we are travelling to Amsterdam, decided to post here as well. Today is Mar 11 and we leave for Amsterdam Mar 28. I just noticed that my passport expires August 2012. My husband tells me not to worry, but he wouldn't mind if we went or not.

There are a lot of "rush passport" services online and I wondered if anyone has used them? Or would it be better (safer) to go to the official passport office?

I want to renew since I know I will be worrying the whole time .

Can't believe I didn't check before

Many people believe that a U.S. passport has to be valid for 6 months after travel to every country, but that does not apply for countries who are party to the Schengen Agreement.

According to the U.S. Department of State's website:

ENTRY / EXIT REQUIREMENTS FOR U.S. CITIZENS: The Netherlands is a party to the Schengen Agreement. As such, you may enter the Netherlands for up to 90 days for tourist or business purposes without a visa. If you are traveling for any other purpose, you may need to obtain a visa. Your passport should be valid for at least three months beyond the period of stay. The 90-day period begins when you enter any of the Schengen group of countries. For further details about travel into and within Schengen countries, please see our Schengen fact sheet. Anyone intending to stay longer than 90 days must obtain the appropriate visa from the Dutch Embassy or a Dutch consulate in the United States."

Thus, you do not need a new passport assuming you will not be staying in the Netherlands until May. To see the entire webpage about The Netherlands on the USDOS website, go to:

Further, should you still be concerned and want to get a new passport, you can try to see if the New York Passport Office will accept you as an emergency case. The information on how to schedule an appointment at the New York Passport Office can be found at:

They may say you do not qualify since your passport has not expired (which is what the emergency service is generally for) and because your passport is valid for travel to the Netherlands.

Your best bet is to try to schedule an appointment. The "rush" services will just charge you a lot of money to do something that you can (or cannot) do on your own.

As with most things in life, if you pay enough, you can get a passport very quickly.

You just missed national passport day, in which passport offices were open on March 10.

There are a bunch of sites that you can google, so check them out.

I had a rush trip to Taiwan, and had to use one such service. It worked, it wasn't cheap.

Thanks all for your replies. I decided to renew my passport with a service - primarily because my expiration date was so close. Even though I read (thanks Longhorn) that the passport should have at least 90 days on it before expiring, mine had four months and to me it was too close.

Anyway, I went with a service called "". I read some good reviews - WSJ and CNN along with some reader reviews and it seemed pretty positive. The cost was $200 not including the $170 paid to the State Dept. I was told I should have it by the 24th and we are leaving on the 28th.

I'll let you know when it arrives.
thanks again

I received my passport today, 4 days ahead of schedule. The best thing about Rushmypassport is they kept me informed along the way with email updates (we received your paperwork; we submitted your paperwork;your passport has been shipped).
Expensive but good service.
