Check the routing at www.ratp.fr .
It's possible a bus may be best.

Take Metro line 8 to Strasbourg-Saint-Denis. Transfer to Metro line 4 and take it to Gare du Nord. The RATP Journey Planner says to allow 25 minutes for this trip (that includes the time to walk from the surface to the track level, walk between lines at Strasbourg-Saint-Denis, and walk to the surface at Gare du Nord). Your actual ride time will be 12 minutes for the first leg and 4 minutes for the second.

I've done the route Tim suggested many times. But I would give it at least 40 minutes...I tend to arrive just seconds after the metro has left and have to wait for the next one. Or there's a delay for some reason. Anyway, I'd rather get to GdN early than be late and miss the train.
FYI, in the Thalys bar car, you can buy a single ticket for the Brussels metro. Good for one hour of travel, inc. all transfers. Just an option in case you don't want to stand in line or fiddle with the machines at Brussels Midi metro station (we always buy a 10-ride card at the Louise metro stop and keep a few rides left for the next trip to Brussels).
