Wondering what to wear to Switzerland in June? Any tips would be of help. We plan on going to some nice restaurants around the Geneva area, how formal are the Swiss?
Thanks in advance for any help!

Women there seem to wear too much makeup and jewelry. I was there for a few days and did not find it a friendly country.

Just got back from SW. It has been unusually hot (84 degrees) and is expected to be so for much of summer. Count on a little bit of rain on many days (not all day soakers generally, but enough the raise the humidity for a couple of hours anyway).Nice slacks are fine everywhere or a casual skirt, nothing formal. Take something sleeveless, and also a sweater for chilly evenings. Take an umbrella! Think layers!

For women, a pretty scarf is indispensable for dressing up an otherwise blah outfit. I found it especially helpful in Geneva (very French)! I wore black stretch pants, comfy shoes and a different top each day and just varied the scarf. I fit right in. My companion wore jeans--and stuck out like a sore thumb and even mentioned feeling very underdressed and not comfortable.

Speaking as someone who has lived in Geneva for 10 years, jeans are worn everywhere. Apart from a handful of expensive exclusive restaurants, it would be odd to feel uncomfortable wearing jeans.

I have a dear friend I visit often outside Geneva (Vevey, Montreux). Summers can sometimes be quite warm. There was an unseasonable heatwave last year mid-July when it was 90+F.

I guess it depends how "nice" is nice, for the restaurants you are going to. I wear a linen sundress and sandals or good slacks/silk blouse. My friend always wears her "little black dress" in a knit, either short or midlength with big jewelry and short heel sandals.

p.s. My experiences couldn't be more different than described by the first poster!!

Oh please. Wear what you want. Everyone wants to 'fit in'. Wear purple and forget about it.

hey....some of us consider purple to be as basic as navy or black..... I've never felt out of place. I dress to please me (and my sweetie)

Just got an email from Montreux this morning. There has been a HEATWAVE since early June, with daily temps mid 30s (over 90 degrees F).

We spent a week in Vevey this month and suze is right - it was warm. I bought a couple of sleeveless tops and a sleeveless dress there to wear. I wore capri pants and sandals during the day. Sometimes a summer skirt with a casual top in the evening. Bring cool jammies (or no jammies!)- our room was not air conditioned and neither were the rooms at the very expensive hotel down the street. I've been checking the temps and I think it is still unusually warm there. We didn't see people in shorts and I was surprised that most women wore dresses, even on the plane from Newark to Geneva.

Why is it that MEN never ask these "what should I wear?" questions???? Or are the answers supposed to apply to both sexes?
Or do the women dress to look great while the men dress like slobs?

I dunno Boot*man* you tell us!!!

As a complete aside but incredible tip (if I do say so myself) if you happen to be in Montreux and there happens to be a heatwave, you can get a day pass for the gorgeous pool just off the Quai at the Casino de Montreux. You pay just to swim, or can rent a towel, and/or lounge chair. Nice little concession with sandwiches and beer/wine. 99% local folks cooling off.
