Tassle loafers?!?!?!?!?!? Egads, I would rather go barefoot. Wear comfortable shoes/trainers/workboots while touring. Why would you wear dress shoes when you are going to be walking a million miles????? Yes, when you go to dinner/ballet/theatre etc., wear more formal shoes. But, even I, Thingorjus, wear my Nike trainers (black and grey, not white) while travelling the world. I don't think I look have ever looked louche.

Wow, I go out shopping for a day and look at what happens while I am gone! Fashion Furor!!
A certain Yankee that I know, loves to wear Merril shoes when traveling. They are so comfortable and go from day to evening without looking out of place.
He has no care about looking American, that is of course, what he is..he goes for comfort and style. Whatever your husband wears, maybe he can get it in black, then it might blend in more.
I must say though, I haven't seen any guys on the street lately wearing tassel loafers, isn't that a little out of style? Or is that a regional thing?

What would you you want
Europeans visiting America to wear? A second consideration is what your expectations are. If you expect to hang around with other tourists you can go one way. If you hope to meet locals you can go another way.

Goodness! Let the poor man wear whatever he thinks is most comfortable. We just got back and my husband alternated between some $12 sandals he bought at Target & some Hi-Tec lightweight hiking boots. We thought that the one thing that gave most of the American tourists away was not their shoes but their weight! Although they are starting to have their issues with fat, Europeans are generally thinner than we are and it shows!

thanks for all your comments. travelsmile- my husband is big and brawny and wouldnt be caught dead in a pair of tasseled loafers. how pompous are you!! i am actually not really worried too much about his footware, because he needs to wear what his comfortable- i just figured i would see what everyone else said.

to elaine-- i agree to each his own, i was just referring to the very strong opinion of one of the other posters as to the appropriate footwear. when i also say my husband wears boots, i meant just as day wear not for night. as a visitor in other countries, i dont care what some one else wears, i was just seeing what the majority of opinions was and it was whatever is comfortable.

Tassled loafers?? Hello, is this 1985 or Kansas, which is very similar to 1985? Who has worn those in the last 10 or 15 years?
I would suggest a nice "bowler" style sneaker. While technically they are still sneakers, they come in cool retro colors as well as black. Very hip and comfortable and don't even really appear very "sneaker-like".
Available at places like Steve Madden, Kenneth Cole, Neiman Marcus, etc.

I'm of the -wear what you want and look good in- camp. Oh and comfortable is good too.
Having said that, boots are big & heavy so have them on your feet (rather than in your suitcase where they'll take up half the thing) on the plane, moving hotels, etc.
And if you're going in summer they may be kind of hot (temperature wise, not a fashion comment!) to wear.

My husband also wears sneakers, and he doesn't care if he looks American, because when walking around all day he doesn't want his feet to hurt. I try to blend in more, though I too insist on non-hurting feet, but in Italy my black Ecco shoes still looked American (or maybe northern European?)--because the Italian women of my age were wearing leather pants and stilettos! I blended in much better in Paris, where there seemd to be more of a fashion range, to my surprise.
In any case there are so many tourists around, you are kind of invisible in th crowd. I think it's more important that your attitude be respectful and that you learn a few polite words of Italian, than that your shoes be of a certain type.
