Fashion

Hello! I am an 18 year old girl, and my mother and myself will be traveling to Rome, Florence and Venice in mid April. I was curious if you know of any Italian fashions to be aware of while I am packing, to add into my suitcase or take out! After reading the cowboy-boot post I am a little nervous my style here will not match in Italy. Thanks for all your help!

Hi Amy,

Don't give a second thought to fashion. No matter what you wear you will still look and act like a tourist. Just go as yourself and enjoy yourself. Take comfortable, practical clothing which tends to perhaps the conservative end of the spectrum. Take comfortable durable walking shoes because you'll be walking all day everyday on cobble streets. Ignore those who talk about coordinating wardrobes and fitting in. It just doesn't happen unless you are planning to live there for a few months. Be polite and respctful and no one will care what you're wearing.

Have a great time.

Amy, you're an 18 year old girl--I imagine everything looks good on you. Don't worry.

I guess if I were 18 and travelling in Italy I'd just avoid tiny little skirts and tops and shorts, a) so I could enter churches, and b) so I wouldn't attract to much male attention.

Have a great time.

I'm going to Italy for the first time in May, but I've been to lots of other European countries so I'm familiar with the way women dress--heels, cute outfits, trendy in general. I figured my options were to try and bring some nice outfits, a designer purse or two and makeup, or I can pretend I'm five years younger than I am and dress like a backpacker (flip flops, khakis, plain t-shirts, cool sneakers). Since packing light is a big priority for me, I'm going for the latter.

I notice that shoes this season are foot shaped instead of pointed and are really pretty.
They are far too young for old ladies like myself, but they'd be great for an 18 year old.
You can't go wrong with nicely cut plain coloured trousers and pretty tops.
