Normally, I would not post something like this until I knew for sure what I was going to do with it (I don't want you to buy the seat that I might want!) - - but i am not sure that I will use it all, and so many people hyere on this forum have agonized over how to fly cheap to Europe this summer... so...

...to all the fodors friends I know - - and total strangers as well...

See http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/showt...414&page=3

Example, on Expedia, right this minute.

$502.40

5:30 pm Depart Chicago (ORD)
Arrive London (LHR) 7:05 am Thu 7-Aug
Duration: 7hr 35mn
British Airways 296

9:30 am Depart London (LGW)
Arrive Budapest (BUD) 1:00 pm Thu 14-Aug
Duration: 2hr 30mn
British Airways 4451

12:35 pm Depart Budapest (BUD)
Arrive Chicago (ORD) 6:40 pm Thu 21-Aug
Duration: 13hr 5mn
British Airways 867 / 299
Connect in London (LHR)

I think you could probably stay as little as one day in Budapest, if you wanted - - not necessarily the week, as shown here. I have never been to Hungary, so I will not offer an opinion on length of time you might want to devote there.

Best wishes,

Rex

As long as it's booked on a single ticket, you don't have to make that LHR-LGW connection in 2:25. But you might also wait a while for the next flight to Budapest.

Thanks for posting this Rex. I'm not able to take advantage of it but I love free stopovers!
I'm trying to research cheap fares from the UK to the US return for friends and I'll check if going via Budapest is an option.

Rex,

Wow! I can't use this but topping in case anyone else decides on a whim to visit Romania. Keep us posted, as you do, if you see anything else this good in the future.

So, does that mean you can stop over in London for a period of time like 2 weeks? Get on a plane and to to Paris and back to London and then complete the trip to Budapest?

Yesw, that was quite my point. Notice that in the example given, the outbound flight arrives in London on Aug 7 - - but then does not continue onward to BUD until a week later. Play around with it, but I believe that you could do the LON-BUD/BUD-ORD almost as an afterthought, once you have spent the rest of your time in "anywhere" (reachable from London, which is - - essentially anywhere in Europe),

You just have to get back to London so that you can complete the BA itinerary as purchased - - even if you are in Budapest for (perhaps as little as) one day.
