Fare from Gatwick to Berchtesgaden
I will be at Gatwick airport on June 30 at 1030h.
There is a train from Gatwick to Berchtesgaden
at 1500h, arriving 0900h.
What will be the approx. (lowest) 2nd class fare
for a senior? THANKS!

Where did you read about this non-existant train? From Gatwick you have to go to St Pancras station to catch the Eurostar train that goes under the Channel to Paris - then change trains stations and take an overnight train to Germany - this may possibly be the connection you are talking about but I can't see you arriving in Garmisch at 9am - go to www.bahn.de/en - the official site of German Railways and put in From -Gatwick London To Berchtesgaden and see what the connections are - at least three changes of train or more I would hazzard - for lot of info on overnight trains and trains in general check www.seat61.com; www.budgeteuropetravel.com and www.ricksteves.com.
It probably would be cheaper to fly from Gatwick to Munich or Salzburg and certainly a lot quicker.
There is no direct train from Gatwick to any place on the Continent.

If it IS the Eurostar to Paris then transfer to a night train to Germany -- not only will you have to take the train to Kings Cross/St Pancras in central London, the fare will be very high because any discounted Eurostar fares sell out well in advance.

The "train" you are looking at is actually 7 different trains in 17 hours with changes throughout the night and the last hour being on a bus from Salzburg - since the train does not go to Berchtesgaden.
Have no idea of the price - you would need to price the various segments from the appropriate railways (if you go to bahn.de you can see the specific trains/schedules). But the eurostar from London to Paris is going to be the most expensive and needs to be bought 120 days out to get the best prices - after that they increase significantly the closer you get to the date of the trip.
Since you are already AT the airport it makes much more sense to fly into Munich and hop on the train/bus combo from there - perhaps spending the night sleeping in a bed in a Munich hotel rather than sitting up all night in a train seat and constantly changing trains every couple of hours.

Hi Alex,
it looks like going straight thru from Gatwick to Berchtesgaden would be pretty grueling for a 20 year old, much less a senior. You could break the trip up by stopping for a night close to the train station in Stuttgart or Munich and finishing your trip the next day.
I would recommend that you contact one of the sites listed above by Palnq or give the folks at Euraide (1-781-828-2488) a call. I was very impressed the last time I contacted them...They quoted me prices and seat availability that I couldn't get from the German railsite Bahn.de.
Have a great trip!!!

Alex doesn't want to go to Paris, but to Salzburg: the best way to do that by train is the Eurostar London dp 15.40 up to Bruxelles, then a ICE to Cologne, a Euronight (sleeping cars and couchettes) to Wels and a Eurocity to Salzburg.

the quickest route Gatwick to is to take Eurostar to Paris-Nord - metro to Porte de Maillot then the overnight IC bus to Munich and train To Berchestgaden. (According to www.bahn.de/en).

I'm not too worried about why he is flying into Gatwick - that's his choice. Why is not a concern of mine. At least one I need to insist he answer.
He does have an interesting story though...
