Family trip to Norway this summer 2014

We would like to take our kids ages 10 and 11 yrs to Norway this summer in August. for about 10 days.

Arrival would be in Oslo where we would like to spend a few days and then venture to the coast and to see the beautiful Fjords.

What is the best way to arrange this without joining a tour group or renting a car? How long is it by train say from Oslo to Bergen?

Any ideas or advice on where to stay or what to do and see?

Thank you!

First, you need to get a couple of guide books and so some research to determine what YOU want to see.

As for places to stay - Noway is incredibly expensive - for everything - so you need to give us a specific budget - an amount in some currency - that you are willing to go for - and if you are looking for family rooms for 4 people.

For train info go to - it has schedules for all of europe.

Norwegian Railways:

Look at a site like

Norway is, as nytraveller says seriously expensive. For everything, even pizza starts at about 130 Krone. Hotel rooms tend to be small too, so you may need two rooms.

Do some more research and come back with more questions when you have more idea what you want to do.

Would you also be departing from Oslo? That might be a pain depending on where you are leaving for.

I see there is a safari thread started in December from the OP. She hasn't returned there.

Looks like your giving up your safari for Norway. Posters ahve asked myriad questions which you'll have to address... budget being the main and most critical.

These familiarization pics may help you in developing a list of places within Norway you want to include. As you can see, we opted to take the Norway in a Nutshell train ride, Oslo to Bergen in one long day. Also booked 2+1 day on the Hurtigruten which you could consider...then rented a car in Bodo for the Lofoten Islands and on to Tromso. Memorable and engaging trip....again, need to know your budget ceilings?

Good luck. If you have any specific questions regarding any of these pics, please ask. (I normally do not write trip reports)
