Family Trip to Italy - Help with Itinerary please!

Hello there,

I am currently planning a trip to Italy with my extended family for Sept 2007. We are looking at villas to rent and I am hoping that you can help me out with the order of locations:

The family - at time of travel
My hubby and I (30 and 31)
My brother (27)
My parents (57 and 63)
My inlaws (55 and 58)

The plan is 4 days in Rome and then a week in Priano and a week in Tuscany/Umbria. We just dont know which order for the last 2:

Would it be better to do it:

Rome
Amalfi
Tuscany/Umbria

OR

Rome
Tuscany/Umbria
Amalfi

Rome has to be first because we are flying into Rome on Tuesday and will have a Sat - Sat rentals for the 2 weeks following.

Thanks so much for the help!
Jamie

Hi Jamikens -

We (actually 4 couples) did something like that in September 2005. We spent our first week in Umbria at a villa, then 4 of us (2 couples) went south to Positano and Capri for 4 nights, and finished with 3 nights in Rome. Since both Umbria/Tuscany and Amalfi give you "rural" settings, I'm not sure it makes much difference - ideally you could sandwich Rome between the two rural locations, but since you can't you can't. Since it's "possible" that in September that Amalfi will be warmer than Umbria/Tuscany, you might save Amalfi for last, trying to optimize based purely on weather. But you also might want to check events in the two regions for those two weeks, and see what's happening - e.g., festivals, etc.

That's a good idea -- see what's going on in those areas during the times you'll be there. (That might also be a reason to stay away!) We did a similar trip, too, and did it the other way -- Rome, Amalfi Coast, Tuscany. Was a perfect trip!! I think it makes a little more sense this way because the Amalfi Coast is, I think, a bit further. This way at the end you're closer to Rome where I assume you'll fly out of. If you' re still looking for a villa for the Amalfi area, consider Villa Chiruli in Positano. We had a large group (9) and stayed there and absolutely loved it!!! Can't say a bad thing about it. Let me know if you're interested and can't find it on your own ([email protected]). Ciao!

Jamikins -

Information on our villa (in Umbria) and hotels in Positano and Capri, and B&B in Rome can be found in our trip report -

Thank you so much for the replies. I will start by looking up your suggestions. And yes, we will be flying out of Rome.

Thanks again!

Hi J,

If you are flying in/out of Rome in Sept, I suggest going to the AC first.

As Sept fades into Oct, the weather on the AC becomes iffy.

You will be less affected by poor weather in Tuscany.
