Family room at Rome hotel?
We're taking one daughter to Italy next summer; we have tickets but I haven't done the rest of the planning yet. We are flying to Rome but spending most of the time in a villa in Tuscany with extended family (SIL is planning that part). We'll have 3 or 4 days before we meet the others and I'm thinking of spending them in Rome. Any suggestions for a family room (for 3) in a good location? Daughter will be 18, if that matters. Budget is 300 euro or so.

We stayed at Residenza Canali with our daughter a few summers ago. The room (top floor with a balcony) was certainly spacious enough for all 3 of us. We loved the location - right by the Piazza Navonna. Ask for a discount if you pay in cash. The only negatives were no elevator (and as I mentioned we were on the top floor) and some very loud seagulls nesting nearby. The staff was very friendly - even gave our daughter a birthday present on her birthday. I would definitely stay there again.

You definitely need to let them know you are 3 adults rather than a family with a child- since many family rooms have one double bed plus room for cots or roll-away beds. You need 2 real beds - even if the second is a single.

Look at Hotels Mozart and Portoghesi.

Any hotel that lists a triple room - and many do - will give you a room that has beds to sleep three adults.

Thank you all.

I would disagree that any room that lists a triple will have beds for 3 adults. We have traveled in Europe with our kids, most recently in September with our daughter, and many of the "triple" rooms included cot-type beds as the third bed.
We also stayed as Residenza Canali ai Coronari (it's full name), and were very pleasantly surprised. The triple there was on the top floor (no elevator), and consisted of one small room that we entered into, with a separate single bed, then a separate, much larger room with a queen bed. A door could be closed between the two rooms. It was spacious by Italian standards. We've stayed at the Residenza before, and love the location and the staff. |
Santa Chiara has a triple at about that price, located just behind the Pantheon.

2 years ago my family stayed at Arco Del Lauro in Trastevere. Our room was huge - a large bed for my husband and I and two twins for my sons. Wonderful, wonderful place - it was our favorite of all the places we stayed on that trip. I believe I found the name here on Fodors; look on tripadvisor for reviews - it is highly rated.

Albergo del Senato will have a triple for probably about 330E a night--sometimes you can get deals but not likely in summer. Nice hotel for a short trip because it's so central. If your budget stretches, I recommend the junior suite. You can take a video tour of it on their website; I mention this in particular because I once stayed in that room when we had three adults for part of our visit. The anteroom has a single bed and the door closes between each sleeping area if that's a concern, although the third person will need to access the bathroom via the main bedroom. Great view of the Pantheon.

Leely2, that sounds great---especially the view. I'll look into it.
adelaidemconeill---an apartment is a good idea and what we do when we visit Paris. But this is our first time in Italy, and most of our time will be in a self-catering villa. I think in Rome we'll like being pampered a bit for a few days. |
I think Leely's advice is good. The Senato also has an apartment; ask them about this in addition to the junior suite.

Lots of hotels do have triple rooms, and apartments are an excellent alternative too. www.italiancollection.com is a fantastic site with both and everything from expensive luxury to economical options and of course, a few apartments too. And they have loads of variety. You're bound to find something there.
