ymoubarake,

If you want to see Italy by day trips I suggest you plant yourself in Florence and just scratch Pompeii. You can take day trips to Rome, Pisa, Sienna, and even Venice.

This is NOT the way I would want to see Italy.

A day trip from Rome to Florence is a long one and what you will see is limited. A day trip to Venice really isn't doable - you will spend just to much of your time on the train - and be in Venice only in the middle of the day - with the throngs of tout groups - trying to elbow your way between the mobs.

Day trips from Florence are more doable - but you are still spending a huge amount of time on the train trekking to and fro - versus seeing sights and absorbing the culture of Italy.

Quite honestly, I'd put this trip on hold for a year until you can get organized to make it workable.
