Family of 4 - Northern Italy/Switzerland itinerary suggestions in August!

Hi! Family of four including our two kids, 11 and 13 are heading to Europe for 2 weeks this August! We have our airfare in and out of Milan and now need to plan our trip!

Since we have been to Rome, Venice, Florence, we would like to explore new cities in Italy as well as venture out to Switzerland. We are adventurous, but also don't want to tire the kids too much.

We were thinking of spending 1-2 days in Milan to see the Duomo, Last Supper and then heading to Varenna/Lake Como area for a few days.
What other Italian cities are a must see?
How should we plan the rest of our trip in Switzerland?

For the Switzerland portion, head to the Bernese Oberland area, like the car free villages of Mürren or Wengen. The scenery is breathtaking, Heidi-esque.

Yes head t B Oberland and a nice small mountain village like Wengen - spend 3-4 days there doing all kinds of awesome things - trains are best once there so come from Italy by train - for lots on trains check www.seat61.com; BETS-European Rail Experts and www.ricksteves.com. You don't need a car for Italy either as in Milan cars are a bane and take train to lake and use boats. If car consider steepdropoff chrages if pick up in Italy and return in Switzerland.

The highest mountains and the longest glaciers of Switzerland are less than 100 miles from Milan airport. But it's not forbidden to cross them in railway tunnels (total length about 40 miles) in order to reach the Bernese Oberland, on the Northern side of the Alps.

Bernese Oberland is must see. Your kids will like it - little trains up to little mountain villages, cable cars, zip lining (at First), parks and hikes. Our kids had a blast.

Interlaken also has a summer tobaggon or bobsled run and Jungfrau Park - an amusement park with a Jungfrau theme:

Mysty Land - JungfrauPark Interlaken

Plus boat rides on either lake bookending Interlaken are fun for all ages.

There is a zip line up at Jungfraujoch too I believe.

We divided our time between the Lower Engadine region in Switzerland and Lake Como last August. I found Lake Como unbearably hot. We stayed in Bellagio which was nice, but I thought Varenna was prettier. Switzerland was pleasant. The lower Engadine region was really special, but if this is your first trip to Switzerland better to stick with BO.
