Family Group in Venice
 

Hi there. We are a family of 5 adults & 6 children staying in Venice for one night in August - obviously we need to have separate rooms (i.e. 2 x quads + 1 x single). Any recommendations in the budget price range e.g. EUD120.00/quad? No hotel chains, please! We have found Hotel Casanova and are just about to book...(does it seem a bit early? I just want all this internet time behind me - so far about 20 hours surfing for Paris!).

It is certainly not too early to book for August. We have already booked for late September. August is the height of the holiday season and Venice will be very busy. A hotel close to San Marco at that price sounds very reasonable. As an overnight stay the location anyway is perfect. The only problem is that one night in Venice is nowhere near long enough!!!!

I'm glad to see that I am not being too "monica" (from Friends!). Of course, i have just checked the message from the Casanova and unfortunately I read the price incorrectly- it is EUD190.00 - so a bit of a difference. I'll keep looking, just in case there is a better price for somewhere similar.

I apologize - it seems the private rooms at the above URLs require two nights stay, so that likely won't work.

When we went to Venice in Dec 04, we booked Hotel Canal & Walter through venere.com. It wasn't luxury, but it was clean and fairly friendly. And my parents were lucky enough to get the room at the front of the hotel, with the balcony overlooking the Grand Canal (the big picture on their website).

I don't remember the cost of each room, but we had a quad and a triple for 3 nights and paid a total of 420 euro. Of course, that was low season.

One nice thing about venere.com is that you can enter the number of people in your party and the number of rooms that you want, and it will search for various combinations.

Thank you for that link, Willtravel - have you stayed there? It looks very interesting, similar to staying in a monastery, I imagine, which has always interested me, not because of the religious aspect, but the "feel" and general antiquity. Will explore it further.

Venice is not a city where you necessarily get value for money,
in fact it is very expensive so you have to be cautious. We once stayed at the Hotel Rialto, www.rialtohotel.com, with the kids in one of the Rialto's quad rooms and we all loved it. I think it is a bit more than the budget you indicate, but it's location right next to the Rialto Bridge is fantastic.It's an old place and I don't know how many quad rooms they have, but the brekky was good and the staff helpful.

Kiwi, I haven't stayed there, but I would be glad to do so under the right circumstances. I've read mostly positive reviews on the web for this place, and the murals and concerts there sound very interesting. Another possible limitation is the limited check-in times, as described on the site. But as you can see, it seems very good value for money.

Hi Kiwi, by EUD, do you mean Euro(€) ?

August is actually a mid season for Venice if not for all but at least for many hotels. Still €120 for triple/quad with certain qualities (air-con is a must for me in Aug) is probably not realistic. You will have to consider around €200 or more unless you can take rooms of 1/2 stars wothout air-con. No air-con maybe just for 1 night? Casanova is 4*, isn't it? In that case, even more.

For a price reference, I just took a look at the rates of la Calcina, much praised 3* on the Canal Giudecca, with air-con. They apply Mid season rate for 17JUL-27AUG. Their double room witout view is €109-127. Disregarding the price, their annex suite may be able to take 4 persons.

Mindylt1 - Canal Hotel looks great, have requested pricing from them, so we'll see. Weren't your parents lucky to get that room on the canal.

We are booked into apartments at the Corte Grimani Residence for our stay in August, 2006. I'm not sure about a one night stay, but it can't hurt to check.

Try http://www.cross-pollinate.com/ a website I found on Rick Steves. You may be able to find reasonable rates in a home for 1 night.

Thank you to all. Hopefully I have found somewhere - Ca'San Trovaso Hotel, in Dorsoduro. Quad for EURO130.00 (including breakfast)! Sounds too good to be true, but I have looked at reviews on www.tripadvisor.com and venere.com and generally seems OK.

Ca'San Trovaso 2* has no air-con. Hope they can provide at least electric fan.

If you do decide you need A/C and can't find anything budget in the main parts of Venice, on our last trip to Venice we met some folks who stayed on Murano at the Hotel al Soffiador. They said it was a small hotel and not luxury--but clean and a nice location on the island. And it had A/C.

Though you would have to hop a vaporetto to get to the main part of the old city, it is a short ride and Murano does have some charm of its own.

Sorry I haven't been in the place myself, but I can't think why they would have mislead us about the hotel.

Just another option to consider.
