Familiar with Antica Torre Toscan?
 

Looking for a nice place to stay in Tuscany to make as home base while doing day trips for 4 nights. Anyone familiar with this place or any recommendations?

I think you can probably find something more central to more towns, but it doesn't look bad.

I assume that Siena, San Gimignano and Volterra are the places you want to visit, yes?

Many folks here much prefer the Val d'Orcia area of southern Tuscany, which is fine. I like Siena for art and architecture, and to me, the interior of the Duomo in San Gimignano is one of the best.

Thank you Tuscanylifeedit, yes more info would be helpful. We will be traveling mid May, first 3 days in Rome, train to Naples 3 days in Amalfi, not sure yet where we will set up base, Serranto, Amalfi or Positano, suggestions are much needed and welcome. Then renting a car in Serranto to drive to Tuscany. A travel agent recommending this, stating it was easier to pick up rental car in Sorrento and drive to Tuscany rather than getting a train in Naples. What do you think. Then we plan on 3 days in Tuscany with car, returning it in Florence where we will spend 3 days. Yes the towns you spoke of are on the list and recommedations are needed.

I suggest being actually on the Amalfi Coast, which is not where
Sorrento is. I believe we were picked up in Naples once, then driven to Positano. It was OK, but I would rather take a boat from Sorrento or Naples to the AC. The roads there make me deathly ill.

Another easy way to the get to the Amalfi Coast is to take a train from Rome > Salerno, then any of the frequent ferries back up the coast.

Yes, you could get a car in Sorrento and drive to Tuscany; I read about people doing that frequently. I wouldn't want to return a car to Florence. Florence has become a driving nightmare, but a decent place to return a car is Florence airport, and then bus or taxi into the city. Very convenient.

I totally agree with Bob that you want to pick your area, so if San Gimignano, Siena, and Volterra are on your list, I think I might stay closer to SG, so that you can enjoy the town, its atmosphere, and terrific food, after the day tripper crowds are gone. It's easy enough to get to Siena and Volterra by car from SG.

You could return a car to Siena (not really a picnic, but better than Florence) and take public transport from there.

I am not familiar with train station in Siena, it is outside the city, but someone here may know if there is a rental car return there.

I caution you on returning the car in Florence. There are too many "no car" zones, and it can be very difficult to get your car to rental return without getting a ticket.

These are all just ideas, of course. But perhaps they will help you.
