Faina’s 10 commandments for the trip to Switzerland
1. Knowing that European food is whole and rich, I will start food training right away by consuming as much Belgian chocolates as I can.
2. Following the rule not to take on a trip what you can’t afford to lose I will leave my husband at home. 3. I will not get angry at the locals for not accepting “the real money” - USA currency. 4. I will not get angry at the locals for selling me cheese with holes in it. 5. I will tip the pilot in US dollars for the San Francisco – New Jersey leg of the trip, and in Swiss francs for the New Jersey – Zurich flight. 6. I will not take toilet paper to Europe doesn’t matter what the other tourists say. 7. I will not practice yodeling on the plane even if I feel other passengers need some entertaining. 8. I will not attempt to ride the cows even if they disappoint me by not giving any chocolate milk. 9. I will write a detailed trip report and e-mail it to everybody whether they like it or not. 10. I will take the most important traveling device – my twisted sense of humor, and promise not to lose it under any circumstances. |
Well done, Faina!!
=D> |
Very good!
:) |
Faaabulous!! :D
Especially the 10th!! Have a wonderful time ((F)) |
Hi, Faina... You must be quite an entertaining traveling companion... Do you work at it or does it come naturally?
|
Are you going to buy an alphorn and bring it back as a carry-on?
|
I am quite offended that you would reference a portion of the holy bible such as the 10 commandments, and use it in a frivolous posting about travel.
(Just thought I'd beat someone else to the punch) :) |
11. One word ... Reeeee-kohla!
|
Um, Belgian chocolates? Shouldn't you get a head start with Swiss chocolate?
And I wouldn't shout 'ricola' unless I had an alpine horn. |
Don't forget to pack your pink pajamas for the long flight!!
Auf weidersehen!! |
Hey ncgrrl -- This is way off topic, but we'll be going to NC (Raleigh area). Can you recommend music venues to hear stuff of the Tres Chicas / Tift Merritt sort?
|
Treesa, it comes 1/2 naturally, 1/2 absorbing the posts here, getting experience (or wasting my time, depends on the view) on this board. :(|)
Elaine, travel is a serious business, nothing frivolous about it :) I always have "the prayer for traveler" in my purse, feeling better now? [-o< Kopp, it was not me in that pajama post... I think... :@) But thank you anyway! Vedette, this is a good idea for the return flight entertainment! :-" |
Faina, you are good for my health.
You make me smile!!!!!((F)) |
I think you're very wrong on #7 - you should certainly practice your yodelling on the plane over - so that you'll be in good voice when you get there. The other passengers will welcome it - and several may join in. Perhaps the crew will help.
I was very impressed by the number of yodellers in the street, when I was in Zurich last year. You want to blend in - not stick out like a tourist! Don't forget to plait your hair before you arrive. |
elaine, thank you for the Pre-outrage LOL
God has heard that prayer from me enough times..you know the one, "Oh God, if only I had a piece of chocolate right now!" :D |
NOW I know what is not done. MARGO, WHERE WERE YOU when I asked all Swiss questions :((
I have short black hair, can't bleach and grow braids in 2 days! Gotta run to get a wig! |
Have a great trip Faina. Eat some chocolate for me (preferably Suchard or Cailler).
|
Faina,
What day are you leaving? We have a Newark-Zurich flight on May 19th. I think your commandments are great. |
Don't step in any cowpies and have a wonderful trip!!!!
|
Thank you , all!
Erwench, I am flying out of San Francisco early May 19. The details (and offer to meet) in another post. I'll see if I can find and top it. |
Everyone is wishing you bon voyage, Faina. Check this out:

Faina,
Maybe we will see you at the airport if you connect in Newark on the evening of May 19th. We are flying to Zurich on Continental. If I hear yodeling I'll know its you. Here's to a great trip! |
Rule No. 11: I will say Gruezi (pronounced: Gr i e zi) to everyone who says Gruezi to me. It's the Swiss dialect of "Gruss" or greeting. The Swiss are really into greeting each other on a hike or somewhere off the beaten path.
|
Erwench, it took a while, but finally I've realized: we may be on the same plane! My flight is CO78.
This small world is getting smaller :) |
It is a small world! Faina did iyou know P_M and I were at the Vevey open air farmers market last summer on the very same Saturday morning! Unfortunately we did not spot each other for certain but we did both have glass(es) of local wine.
|
Amazing! We all have to work out some code or a pin or something to recognize each other in the crowds all over the world :) Maybe a pin - letter F for Fodorites?
I hope Erwench reads this today... It would be nice to say "hello" to a person, not just to those black and white lines! |
I sure wish I was going to Switzerland too! Make sure you eat lots of fresh bread, chocolate and drink some of that strong coffee. Enjoy the sight of the beautiful geraniums adorning window boxes everywhere. Breathe lots of that crisp, fresh air. Have a great trip!
|
Not only were Suze and I both in Vevey on the same day, but we both flew BA to Geneva on August 11, 2004. Too bad we came from different cities so we were not on any of the same flights. But hopefully we'll meet the next time we're both in Switzerland--or maybe somewhere else. :-)
|
I'll be the exhausted woman with puffy eyes and a huge smile on her face. Hope we bump into you. I'm so behind in
packing I don't have a clue what I'm wearing to the airport, yet. I know we'll have a fabulous trip. |
LOL great!!!
|
#2 is my favorite. I always leave my husband at home. That would be my budget tip! Actually he will not fly, so he sits at home with a remote control glued to his hand.
|
Oh, thank you for topping! Soon I will post maybe 12-step program of getting ready for Scandinavia not to offend Elaine again :)
