Fabric Shops in Paris
 

In September I will be in Paris with a friend. Her hobby is quilting, she makes the most exquisite quilts. We will be there on her birthday, and I've been trying to do some research on quilting or "patchwork" in France. We are staying in the Marais, and I was wondering if anyone knew of fabric stores around the area. I've read about a store in Montmartre, Marche Saint Pierre, that looks interesting. Has anyone been?? She might want to buy a small amount of fabric or an interesting pattern to take back (or I might want to buy a birthday gift for her).

Going to a fabric store will not be a priority on our trip, we have lots to see and do, but it would be fun to stop in if there was such a store not too far from where we are staying.

I've bought fabric at Marche St Pierre before. It is quite a large store (maybe 7 stories?) so plan on being there a while!

Aww thanks nyse. She's going to have to spend some time looking at children's books and toys for my grandkids so I can look at fabric with her. (she doesn't have any little ones to shop for). Besides, it might inspire me to sit down at a sewing machine again. I've been looking at websites of fabrics and ribbons and it all looks very inspiring. They remind me of how fabric stores looked when I was growing up. There are fewer and fewer such stores around here nowadays.

Judy, wow 7 floors??? I just found a blog about French quilting. The blogger stated that if you go to one fabric store in Paris, Marche St Pierre would be the one to go to. It also sounds like this is not too far off the usual tourist areas. She mentioned asking for a "coupon" or remnant of fabric, which might be the way for a quilter to go.

The Marche is very close to the Sacre Coeur funicular. Google map it and you are good to go.

My daughter found this store when we were there in March. The most fun find was a huge selection of interesting and cute buttons.

What are your September dates again? I think I will miss you by just a few days.

The last few times I went to Marché Saint-Pierre, there were signs everywhere stating that you could not purchase 'coupons', or swatches.
I believe the least amount of fabric you can puchase is 1/4 of a mètre.
There is another store directly across the street that sells buttons, notions, ribbons, and has some pre-cut swatches.
There are fabric stores right around the area, so you'll be spoiled for choices.

Marche Saint Pierre does offer an overwhelming selection of fabrics.

If you go there, be sure to have paper and pen. You think you'll remember where you saw fabric or a particular shop, but you won't. Draw maps with landmarks (cafe on corner) rather than street names.

Know, however, that little is manufactured in France, so do check the end of the bolt if it matters to you.

If you do find terrific fabrics, this is not the time to economize if your friend recognizes beautiful patterns and prints she hasn't seen elsewhere.

It would be wonderful to create a quilt with fabrics you collected in Paris to enjoy in your home.

Buses 46, 96, etc., are nearby, depending on where you're staying in the Marais or you can ride the metro to Richard Lenoir or rue St Maur.

Thanks again everyone for all the good detailed information. I'm getting excited. I agree that a quilt of Paris fabrics would be amazing. I am in awe of my friend's talent and her eye for picking out the right fabrics. I will report back how our fabric hunt goes.

Belinda, don't tell me you are going to miss seeing me again!! Last year you left Paris a few hours before I arrived!! Our planes probably passed each other in the air!! Someday girl, someday!! We will be there September 6-10 and then we continue on to Berlin. That's not enough Paris time I know.
