Looking diligently for less expensive airfares from Los Angeles to Rome? Have any ideas or search (internet) tips? Once in Rome thinking of staying 4 nights, then on to Almalfi Coast for a few nights. What is the best transportation mode? Any other wonderful suggestions for a pretty ignorant gal.

YOu might want to repost your message with a title that actually relates to the information you want, you'll probably get better responses.

Look at direct RT flights to London (or maybe Paris and Amsterdam), then purchase RT flights to Rome from London. The combined price should be cheaper than pricing a flight to Rome. Even if you book a flight to Rome, it appears you'll always have at least one stopover from LA anyways.

By the way, your proposed itinerary sounds exactly like what we've arranged for in May. I got lucky by booking during Virgin-Atlantic's special 2nd passenger for $1 so 2 RT tickets to London were only a little over $600 from LAX. Then we booked flights to Rome, returning to London from Naples for less than $200 each so that we wouldn't have to go back to Rome after visiting the Amalfi Coast. We're flying British Airways for the Italy portion, but we had to purchase tickets through Expedia (others avail) since we couldn't book RT flights departing from London from BA's website since we didn't reside in the UK. By the way, flights from Naples to London arrive in Gatwick and not Heathrow. Hope this helps!

From Rome to the Amalfi coast, you can train to Sorrento and take the bus or ferry to your destination, or you can train to Naples, change to the Circumvesuviana to Sorrento and on to your destination.
