Extended car hire in the UK

We are planning to be in the UK for about 8 weeks next year. We have home exchanges in place from the Lakes District In the north to Cornwall in the south so really need a car. We’d welcomed any suggestions on the most ecinomuct way to approach this. Think I’ve read where leasing is a possibility. You input would be appr3ciated.
Thanks in advance.

you have google in oz?

It also depends on your actual full itinerary -- two different hires with a train journey or two in between would eliminate the need for a 2 month hire.

Sure do have google bilboburgler. Thanks. Will check them out.

Can always rely on you for great advice JanisJ, thank you. I think you have a point as we’re spending quite some time In Londo and Oxford so do not think we’ll need a car then.

My Kiwi sister comes on sabatical every 3 years for 12 weeks and uses the Renault deal. Choose your pick up point carefully and yes a car in London or Oxford is no use, but the lease deal is very good especially if moving from rental home to rental home.

IN Oxford you don't want/need a car, but if you are staying outside of the city itself, a car would be very helpful. In the city a car is a real PITA.

And naturally you don't need a car in London.

We use the car lease program every year in France and our experience is that it is somewhat easier to pick it up at a smaller city versus CDG but the airport pickup aren't that difficult either if that works best for you. There is a pretty good Paris pickup in the city in the 16th neighborhood that is basically located in a parking structure on the edge of the city. Depending on your planning, Calais ferry might also be an option.

Also, be aware when you look at the program that when you price compare, the leasing program covers complete insurance coverage roadside assistance etc. We love the program. One small detail is that opposed to rental cars, the car comes almost empty of gas since they are coming directly from the factory-so you will need to fill up before you go very far.

Neither of those lease outfits have pick up points in the UK, which suggests that all their cars are for right hand drive countries. Anyone know whether they have left hand drive?

Aussiefolk Jun 11th, 2019 12:55 AM

Oops. Sorry!!!

Aussiefolk Jun 11th, 2019 12:56 AM

Thanks Joie. Will take that on board. ✅✅✅

Yeah I am pretty sure that they only offer right hand drive. Here is something from the autoeurope.com site:

"All Peugeot vehicles are left hand drive"

We have picked up cars that we did use to go to the UK but we were also using it for an extended period of time in France. For someone like the OP who it sounds like is exclusively going to use the car in England I am not sure the hassle of getting it there is worth it. Also, one kind of funny memory I have about driving a left hand car in England was that I was happy I had someone else with me when going into pay parking lots because for me the lift gate machine was on the "wrong side" and wouldn't have been easy to access if I had been alone.

Aussiefolk:

I was looking at the autofrance.net site for my planning for next spring, and noticed they do have a UK pickup for cars at Heathrow! So I wanted to correct my post above for you as well as others, about not being able to get cars in England. I still don't know if they only offer right hand drive but I can tell you they are very responsive to email, so I wouldn't hesitate to contact them for more information
