Exploring W, S and SE with minimal backtracking

Rethinking what was originally a 9 day Ring Road trip to focus on Northwest (Snaefellsjokull) to Southeast (Hofn area).

We arrive early A.M. Monday August 24th and Depart Tuesday afternoon September 1st, so 9 days including travel days.

The plan is to get in as much natural sights as possible and a couple of adventure activities; horseback riding and glacier hike.

To avoid as much backtracking as possible, looking into domestic flights. Trying to figure out what route makes most sense:

Option A:

Drive from Reykjavik to Hofn

Fly back to Reykjavik

Drive from Snaefellsjokull and back to Reykjavik

Option B:

Fly from Reykjavic to Hofn

Drive from Hofn to Snaefellsjokull and back to Reykjavik

Similar options if we fly to Blonduos, though that's overshooting Snaefellsjokull by about 4 hours.

Hoping to fit in all/most of the following:

Thingvellir (Þingvellir) National Park

Geysir (Strokkur geyser)

Gulfoss waterfall

Seljalandsfoss waterfall

Skógarfoss waterfall

Dyrhólaey beach

Reynisfjara beach

Fjadragljufur canyon

Skatafell National Park (Svartifoss)

Vatnajokull Glacier

Jokulsarlon

Westman Islands

Snaefellsjokull National Park & Glacier

Kirkjufel

Glymur

Any thoughts?

Thanks!

Personally I would choose Option B as you are only picking up your Hire car once. Also you won´t need to drive to RVK en route to Snæfellsness from Höfn. Bear in mind domestic flights in Iceland are expensive, as is hiring a car from a different location to where you return it...

How much of your wish list you get to see really depends on how long you plan spending at each place. For example one could easily spend 4-5 days hiking around Skaftafell, but you don´t really have that much time...

mikeyred242,

Didn't think about extra cost for one way rental, that's a good point. Flights seem to be reasonable at 132 Euros one way. Which area do think is most worth a 2 day stay if we can fit it in?

Hi! You are totally missing Landmannalaugar, although it will be on the way. Why? The place is really worth seeing
