Exploring Tuscany by bus?

I know this will be against the advice of most Fodorites, but we are wondering if we could visit several of the hill towns by bus from Siena. We will have three days there, and want to see San G and possibly some others, while leaving some time to enjoy Siena. If we absolutely have to rent a car we will, but the idea of my navigating while my husband drives has us both a little nervous (memories of being lost for three hours in the Loire Valley last year are still fresh!). So what do you think? Is it do-able by bus??

Hi, well it better be because that is what we intend to do from Siena when we are there in Oct. There is a good website about Siena that has listings of the buses and schedules. Tryhttp://www.turismoverde.com/english/enhome.htm

Mail me if this doesn,t work. Stephen

We went by bus from Siena to San Gimigniano and also to a wonderful small walled hilltop town of Monterigione which was only about 20 minutes away on the bus (short climb from bus stop). Just check the schedules at the bus station.

Three weeks ago I went through Tuscany, from Florence to Orvieto, with stops in S. Gimignano, Siena, Pienza and Montepulciano, the last two a must for architecture students. For most of these, buses were the only option. Bus schedules seemed to be fairly regular, but don't believe everything the website says. The busses were very nice and safe, by the way.

American tourists clutching Rick Stave's guidebook seemed to be flocking toward Monteriggioni, so I didn't even try. San Gimignano was zoo-like from 9 am until around 7 pm. After 7 it was magical.
