I totally agree with the previous poster.

The fact that everyone has an individual experience is the reason there can be 20 people giving opinions on the same hotel--and all the opinions are different. Everyone just had a different experience and all the experiences are equally valid. What gets me are all the arguments on boards about whose opinion is the "right" one (with a zillion people vying for the last word). All the opinions are "right". It is the people and the experiences that are different.

Insofar as the megabucks hotels are concerned, I always ask "What are you doing there?" It is a different story if you are hosting a wedding in a fancy place than if you are just showering or sleeping in the room.

Thanks for the compliments, by the way. They are appreciated.

I think it depends on what you feel a vacation is. Some people look forward to a luxurious room and great service, and spend quality time there. For others that are on the go from daybreak till bedtime they prefer just a clean place to sleep. I think you can "see" all there is to offer meet all kinds of people if you are willing to explore a little no matter where yo stay. Sometimes a great hotel is important to me and other times I know that I will not be there enough to justify paying the price. I have to say though that if money is no object then I prefer the best, but if staying in a great hotel prevents me from being able to see and do the thins I want to do then I would forgo the Great room for a bed & breakfast.
