Ed, try posting on the cheap flights forum at Eurotrip.com if you don't get a response here. There are some posts about Air Europa, and a post from a traveller that flew them MAD-JFK fairly recently.

Used Europa twice round trip from Madrid to Barcelona and everything went ok. I would say it is similar to ATA or Southwest. Don't know about their international flights.

Air Europa is a good airline depending upon the fligth attendants. When I went from JFK to Baranjas, the flight attendants were extremely rude. But on the way back to JFK the flight attendants. The food on board was excellent. They serve tea or coffee three times during the flight. The seats were very comfortable. I highly recommend using Air Europa

My gf and I flew Air Europa just last week. We too didn't know what to expect but it turned out fine. Although this was a domestic from Barcelona-Madrid.

-Antonio
