Exchanging dollars to Norwegian kroner

We fly into Bergen on a Sunday and will be taking the Norwegian Coastal Voyage. Is it better to exchange money at the airport (and which to use, dollars or Visa) or hope to find an ATM that's available in town? On board ship, is it better to pay for extras with Visa or should we change enough kroner in Bergen? Conventional wisdom says that the Visa rate is better but don't know if that would apply on board the ship.

you always get the best rate by paying by credit card. norway is quite good about atms but banks and exchanges can be hard to get by.

Poor you, the dollar is weak against the european currency and we in UK think Norway is expensive, it may well be horendous for you

Use your Visa card. We had no probelm finding an atm in Bergen last summer.

We flew into Norway with zero kroner on ourselves but were able to get NOK from an ATM machine at the airport using credit card. We did the same thing when we flew into Icelend.

There are plenty of ATM machines in larger ports that you can obtain cash. On the Hurtigruten ships you can use your onboard card (which eventually go on your credit card at the end of the voyage) for the extras. The cash is mainly used to buy little things when you are in ports.

It's always better to use an ATM, in my experience. Though I didn't fly into Bergen, I've never been in an airport that doesn't have an ATM near baggage claim.

Bergen's airport is quite small and there are two ATM's in the main area. There is also a bank and a Currency Booth.

The Hurtigruten uses a cruise card for checking on and off the ship as well as an onboard credit card which ultimately ends up on your linked credit card. You can also exchange currency at reception.

There are no ATM's where the ships dock. In Trondheim, it is quite a walk 'til you find one.

Bergen airport can be small, but there are several ATM machines.

There are ATMs in some of the places where Hurtigruten docks - Hammerfast for one, Tromso for another, so don't worry. They are within walking distance from ship. Trondheim is one of the few ports that you need to walk a distance.
