Excelsior, Eden or Intercontinental in Rome?

We will be celebrating a 40th B-Day in Rome at the end of November. Has anyone stayed at the Excelsior, Eden or Intercontinental?

Lara,

If money is not an issue, I love the Eden! And it has a fabulous restaurant on the top floor with a view of the city (I'd suggest trying it even if you don't stay there...)

Dona

I stayed twice at the Eden. had once a small room, with a wonderful marbled bathroom, and a wonderful view from the window. make sure that you book a superior or executive room there.

I also prefer the Eden location over the Excelsior, since is a short stroll to Piazza di Spagna. The restaurant is wonderful and the view you'll afford from there is gorgeous.

The De La Ville is very well located, but I've read some complaints on the rooms. You'd better check the rants&raves section here, or make a search on these hotels.

Surlok

Eden much the better. I'd make the Excelsior a relatively close second choice. The (Intercontinental) de la Ville is a good 4-star hotel, but not at all in the same class as the other two. While many will like the location above the Spanish Steps I find it quite inconvenient.

twenj

I stayed at the Intercontinental in Rome last Thanksgiving. You cannot beat the location at the top of the Spanish Steps, but I absolutely hated the hotel. The room (an upgrade!) was small, dank, and dark. The plumbing emitted a less than desirable smell. The staff at the Intercontinental in Paris, our next stop, told us they get get a lot of complaints about size/quality of rooms at the Rome location. For the cost, there must be better hotels with equally good locations.

Have fun.

My wife and I stayed at the Excelsior in Rome early this year and found it delightful. Service outstanding, restaurant OK (but there are excellent ones within a few blocks), location superb. A comment on room would not be relevant since we were upgraded to a suite that produced a "wow" reaction on entry, and repetition of that seems unlikely.

Does anyone know the St. Regis Grand??

Surlok Dec 10th, 2001 07:36 AM

I haven't stayed there, but friends did. The St. Regis is now the best hotel in Rome, the rooms are ample, recently redecorated, the beds are the most comfortable, au pair with American standards, the service and amenities are superb. However, it's not the perfect location for tourists. It's in a mostly a business oriented area. It's not far from the touristic sites, though.

Have a look at the Rants&Raves Fodor's section.

Regards,

S
