Ex-Punk in London
I guess I am a ex-punk who got to much education and now works 15 hours a day in a Fortune 6 conglomerate. Through my life, I have always followed the new music scene in the UK. This includes a small time Blues band called "The Rolling Stones," when the words "Clapton is God" was written on bathroom walls. Include my all time hero and life martyr-Pete Townsend-- not to mention the Beatles. Add the Clash and of course my namesake--The Sex Pistols. Take music from the early 60's to today, I am going to London and would like to know where are "Landmarks" of this incredible music scene. It can be a street corner where something happened, a hotel where someone died or lived, a home or record company location. Just looking for sights for a first time visitor and long time fan. General directions would be nice. No Spice Girl information needed ! But thanks anyway.

The Original London Walks company offers two tours dedicated to the Beatles. www.allthingsbritish.com can link you to a description of the walks.

You may also want to check out Carnaby Street. I believe that a nightclub is there where Paul met Linda.

Hope this helps.

Fodor's publishes a guide to Great Britain and Ireland called "Rock & Roll Traveler: The Ultimate Guide to Famous Rock Hangouts Past and Present" by Ed Glinert & Tim Perry. I'm not sure if it's still in stores (it's from a couple of years ago) but I bet you could get it from a library or Amazon or something.

As for Carnaby St., it's actually a street in London, sort of the ground zero of the "swinging 60's". You might be more interested in King's Road, where Malcom McLaren and Vivienne Westwood first set up shop. I think she still has a store there, but don't know if it's in the same location where Sid et al hung out and worked.

Many thanks. I leave on Friday. I can't wait. My boss is covering a meeting with top executives of my work and he is likely to get "hammered." I told him while the meeting was going on, I would be in a pub drinking. He laughed and said "Good."
thanks again
