Forget the James Bond movie, I think all the people (read here, “women”) who are watching Outlander are going to head over there looking for Jamie.

I was daydreaming about a trip: Edinburgh (4 days), Inverness (3), Oban or Skye (2-3), Glasgow (2?), then on to England and Cumbria (3 -4). Could we do that without a car? We could hire a driver from Inverness to Oban. and do day trips from Edinburgh and Inverness, with all the companies that offer them.

What do you think? My guide book won’t be published for a month…and the country looks amazing!!!

Mostly doable w/o a car.

Normally I'd say avoid Inverness, but since it is a good sized city, you'll have more access to day torus and driver/guides.

Rabbies has just announced a tour that will include the places where the "Outlander " series was filmed. Perhaps a look at their itinerary would help.

Iwant2go, I've done all those places without a car except for Skye. I really think one needs a car for Skye but you could hire a taxi for a full day's guided tour around the island. A possible itinerary might look like this:

Edinburgh to Inverness via train.

Inverness to Kyle of Lochalsh via train.
Pick up rental in Kyle or arrange a taxi for touring.

Armadale to Mallaig via ferry
Mallaig to Oban train ( part of the West Higland Line )
Oban to Gladgow via train.

Oh forgot Cumbria. Train from Glasgow to Carlise.

Thanks guys! Don't want to hijack this thread, so I'll post later and ask for more info. I don't know anything about the Isle of Skye, and only thought that the Highlands sounded so beautiful that we shouldn't miss them! I need to do some research to ask intelligent questions.

We have pretty much decided not to attempt driving on the other side of the road again - did so a long time ago in Wales and think it's not a good idea. But I have seen several websites for guided day tours that look really great (including the Outlander one).
