Ever visited somewhere..........
Ever visited somewhere that you thought, hey I could live here??? For me it would be Scotland, stunning scenery, vibrant cities and escape to highlands and islands when required!
ed--

yes!! for me it's also scotland, for exactly the reasons u mentioned. if i cd accomplish this it wd be my third visit-move sequence, after tokyo (3 yrs as a bilingual journalist) and ho chi minh city (4 yrs as a bilingual adoption facilitator). but ironically scotland, where i wdn't need to acquire another language, presents the most insurmountable visa obstacles for an american unaffiliated w/ a major company. guess i'll need to keep visiting every 6 or 7 yrs.
again I agree, is this not strange that 3 people agree!! Also Scotland so close to London which is also great city, but not one I'd chose to live in!!
interesting question, I often thought Lonson would be great, but not sure about living there. sweden would be good but I'd go for France or Scotland, again variety
I have lived in Leningrad (when it most definately WAS Leningrad) and New York. I wouldn't go back to either. I would however move to Andalucia, which is quite possibly my favourite place on Earth, realxed lifestyle, right sense of priorities regarding material wealth and quality of life, and beautiful to boot. Chiang Mai in Thailand would be another possibilty for much the same reasons.

And I don't thnk that London is near Scotland, one of those "differences of scale" issues again!
I know its a european link - but under this question i'd go for Chicago - what a great, interesting fun city
Chicago the windy city? No way!
I would choose Skeanyatelas - not sure if the spelling is correct in the Finger Lakes in NY State.
And Paris anytime
Often when I travel, I ask myself...would I want to live here? Below are a few places, in my fantasies, I would like to live in:

Galway, Ireland - Great small, but lively, city

Saba - in the Caribbean - for the winter season - ditto for Miami Beach

San Miguel, Mexico

Hey -- Chicago is a wonderful, liveable city!
And thanks for the mention of Skaneateles -- I spent a lot of my childhood summers swimming in that beautiful cold water:) [I grew up in nearby Syracuse]

So Europe? Paris of course. No contest :)
This is also not a European reference, but the first time I was in British Columbia, as I drove my rental car off the ferry on to Vancouver Island, I looked around and thought "Oh, my goodness. I'm home." The feeling was so strong that I plan to move there in a couple of years. I've been back every year since.
Sweden for me if a little pricy, Edinburgh is one of my fav cities, stunning city, friendly people - I have often though could I live here, yeah!
I must be the odd one out but I'd love to live in London - so close to Wales, Ireland & Scotland (relatively)! History, vibrant life!!
The island of Jersey....incredibly beautiful, friendly people, I love it.

Oh, yes, I agree...Scotland! I would move there in a New York Minute...

And I think it would be a ball to live in Italy...

But I gotta admit...these would be second homes.....I could never leave my home..stunning scenery, vibrant cities and escapes to highlands and islands when required, and people with the best attitude in the world....the good old U.S.A!!
Time to dispel the "urban legend" .... Chicago is not even in the top 40 windiest places in the US. It was dubbed the "windy city" by NYC newspaper writers because of our -- ahem -- "verbose" politicians. Now, love him or hate him, we have Son of Daley, who has a habit that our local media loves of tripping all over his tongue (whereas, his father fell in for malapropisms... and, not the cute Yogi Berra kind).

Enough of the Chicago sidebar ... to answer the original question, I feel that way about southern Germany and Salzburg, most of Ireland, and Paris. Oh, and Florence, Piran, and anywhere along Alsace's Wine Route. And, I really fell in love with Durango, Colorado this past winter during my first visit. (I'm overly adaptable.)

Of course, I do love my hometown, too.
For me Ireland & Scotland have friendliest people but I could spend the rest of my days chasing the whisky trail in Scotland!!!
I have now done it three times; in Paris, Geneva, and Shanghai, and if our luck holds, we plan on continuing to to take the "slow traveler" philosphy to its limit!
Around Interlaken, Dresden, Budapest
SCOTLAND - hands down. (I'd love to live in London but housing is just tooooo pricey)

My only problems w/ Scotland is deciding exactly where since there is no area I don't like, and the stringent UK emmigration requirements. BUT, you can go for 6 months just on your passport - so six months in Scotland and a few months in Northern California - that would be the good life.
Edinbourgh and Amsterdam.
Another Vote for Scotland... the friendliest people and lovely to boot!
Hi, Ed!
Every place I have ever visited makes me think about this question.
I haven't been to Scotland yet. It is on the list, however. I have only heard lovely things about it!
I would like to buy a little cottage on the Northern coast of Portugal. I love the people, the scenery, and the ocean. If I have my way, I hope to have my winter home within a couple of years.
Thanks for asking! :)
Gigi
Edinburgh without a doubt. I fell in love with the city the moment the taxi hit Princes Street. Great walkable city, lovely people and within close proximity to a beautiful countryside. I only wish I could land myself a job with an American country...been trying, but no luck as of yet.
Oh yes. Landed in the Dordogne for the first time in March 1992. Thought it was the most beautiful place on earth and yes, I could definitely live there. October of 1993 I owned a house there.
It wasn't such a fly-by-night experience as this would suggest - we'd been thinking of buying a place in France for years, but yes, the experience of landing in a particular area and saying "oh yes!" certainly happened. For those of you with dreams of this kind, do it if you can and if it fits into your other life plans. There are people who are simply destined to end up someplace far from where they were born. You know it instinctively. It's much more than the feeling that you really "connect" with a place (I've felt that in dozens of European venues); it's the feeling you lived there in another life and need to go back.
Paris is number one; I knew it the moment I first set eyes on the place.

Second is the Dordogne; it smells right (don't ask me why, it just has certain smells that make me feel happy)

Third is the Antrim Coast in Northern Ireland. It looks familiar.
Oh, yes, St Cirq, I agree! I felt that way in Vienna as a child, and London was "home" the first moment I set eyes on it at the age of nine. (As a grown-up I ended up marrying an Englishman and going to live in London -- coincidence?)

Elvira, your comments about the smell of a place stuck a chord for me.
Now my curiosity is aroused, and I'm going to have to go to the Dordogne!
Some good thoughts there! I'd like to live somewhere near the French Alps, often though what a great place to live! Especially near the 3 valleys, winter heaven!! But I do go with Edinburgh, London or Glasgow! Vibrant varied cities
Right now anywhere but the desert I live in would do! It is just so hot!

Elvira you struck a cord with me as well. The air in Ireland has a certain smell that is just wonderful for me. I think its a combination of all the greenery, the burning peat and just that fresh air! I was so happy to smell it when we arrived in shannon this June.

I have loved most of the places we have visited but to live I'd like Paris,
Salzburg, and Florence (to learn another language too) or anywhere in Ireland, England, or Scotland.

Oh yeah, I could live in British Columbia too!
Patti
Like you Sarah I thought Edinburgh was great, friendly, varied and stunning views - close to highlands as well!!
Berlin! We already live in London and are just waiting for my boyfriend to get his residency (and with it a European work permit), then Berlin for sure. Its one of the most exciting and vibrant cities I have been to. It has a great feel to it.
Gothenburg, been there a couple of times and think its stunning, friendly clean and honest city - if only it wasnt so expensive!! Its amazing how many times you think on travels, hmm could I live here!
I always thought about somewhere on the west coast of scotland, out near Oban, Tobermory, the complete get away from it and Glasgow only 2-3 hrs away ideal!!- if only that could happen in reality!!
