Evenings in Rome
 

My sister and I (adults) are taking my parents to Rome October 23-28 for my dad's 65th birthday. Besides the typical "Rome at Night" tour, eating too much pasta, and drinking too much wine, any suggestions for what to do in the evenings?

When you arrive in Rome, pick up a copy of the English newspaper called "wanted in rome" and you will find the week's events listed. Perhaps there will be some concerts or exhibits that will interest you while you are there!

I took my Mom to Rome last November and one of her favorite evenings pasttimes was to walk around Piazza Navona and/or around Fontana de Trevi. Great memories.

I don't know what others do...but after a late dinner..we just walk around absorbing the sights in a totally different aspect than during the day..then sitting in cafe having a drink or a granita and watch the world pass by! I have no idea what a Rome at Night Tour is and I don't think I want to!

I'm with you, jody. I suppose a Rome at Night Tour involves sitting on a packed bus with other people as you drive around looking through the windows of the bus at the sights that are much better enjoyed walking and experiencing.

My biggest problem with the evenings in Rome is trying to decide when to call it quits. I could wander for hours.

To be clear--Sitting on a bus is NOT--I repeat, NOT our idea of a good time. If we do tours, they will be Scala Reale. As we're NYers and foodies, most likely we'll do the late supper and cafe/wine option (read...this is right up our alley), but I'd love to have some options for a couple of nights should we need some distraction from being with each other all day long.

Sorry..no help here...we are celebrating our 42nd in Paris in Oct..and we WERE NYers and foodies and neither of us needs distraction! Unless you count when we go to the grocery and he tells me what I need to buy! Then I could use baseball bat distraction...on his head!

The possible need for distractions stems from comments such as, "Rome is all really lovely, but I hope that someday you can bring a HUSBAND here. Hint. Hint."

Just came back from honeymooning it Italy - you must do the "Rome at Night" Scala Real tour - it was magnificent (and it will be a distraction). Go on concierge.com for some good ideas on where to go as well. My trip report will be posted soon with some other suggestions.

There are performances of Rossini's
"L'ITALIANA IN ALGERI" at the Teatro dell' Opera that week. We have friends who are also going to Rome in late October and are attending. They got their tickets through charta.it.
Very reliable, we've used them twice in the past.
This is one of Rossini's least performed
operas, but I note that the MET has it on it's schedule for early '04
