Evenings in Prague - alone

I am leaving for Prague Nov 1 - my first trip there although I am well traveled. I will only be there 3 nights. I figure the first night I'll be jet lagged and will go to bed early but what would you suggest for the other two nights? I will be staying in Vsyehrad section. Thanks

Vicky,

you will see many offers to attend classical music concerts in various locales throughout the city, and they are reasonably priced (ca. 10 USD/ticket). There are often two evening time slots.

I've been to four of them in my various visits to prague and must admit that they ranged in quality from so-so to excellent. I only wish I knew how to figure that out in advance.

I went to the ballet--Swan Lake--at the National Theatre in Prague, which was very enjoyable. It started about 7:00 and lasted until about 9:30, I think. Be sure to get allow plenty of time to get there before it starts as they are very strict about not letting anyone in after the curtain goes up. They sell refreshments at intermission. I was with 1 other person but would have felt completely comfortable going there by myself (and you don't need to really "dress up").

Is it safe to walk around in the evenings? Are there alot of people out in the old square and Wenceslas Sq areas? What about taking the subway at night? I will have money well hidden with only what I need on me.

Hi Vicky,
I was in Prague on Saturday on Business but took some time out.And I can tell you that there are people that appear to be 'hanging around' on the pavements. I felt a bit threatened by this until I discovered that the people were in fact waiting for a tram ! they don't have obvious tram stop signs there, in fact the signs are on the wall and I failed to notice it !!
At the top of Wenceslas Sq (which I discovered is not a square but a street)
on the left side as you walk towards the museum is a small supermarket that sells snacks and drinks etc at cheaper prices than many places.
The Castle (large church) is soooo busy with tourists, I hated it.
But the Old town is lovely. Beware of the cobbled streets and roadworks (leave your stilletto's home)
IMO Charles bridge was the epithomy of tourist tack !!
But enjoy yourself and just take precautions as you would in any major city.
Have fun and check out the other posts for restaurants particularly the 3 black roses and U Sadlu.Really great places to enjoy.
If you get to 3 black roses pub say Hi to peter.

Have fun

I ditto the concert idea. Make sure you see at LEAST one concert or opera in one of the major halls (State Opera, National Theater, Rudolfinum, etc). I am a woman, and travel alone to Prague quite often. You can walk around anywhere until about 12:30 AM. After that, you are still safe, but around Wenceslas Square, some men might think you are a prostitute (no matter WHAT you look like!), and try to talk to you. Where are you staying around the Vysehrod section? There is a metro stop there, and the trams run along the river, so you shouldn't have too much of a problem getting around. Regular public transit stops at Midnight, though, so budget your time accordinglt, or you will need the night tram or a taxi. Have fun in Prague!

Just came back from 5 nights in Prague, and had a great time. I heard that Wenceslas Square at night could be a little iffy, so we didn't go there. On the other hand, we were in Old Town Square practically every night (our hotel was near there), and it was fine -- lots and lots of people walking around at least as late as 11. I'd also recommend the music in Prague -- there was a different opera playing every night we were there!

Thanks for your suggestions. My hotel is the Vsyehrad Hotel in the Vsyehrad section -street is something Marie... I did see a metro stop on the map in that general area. I love ballet and music so will try to find a concert. Tell me about the food.

Vicky, Prague is very safe at night, including the subways, and it's an easy place to meet people or enjoy yourself alone. You should definitely try to catch a concert at Obecni Dum, which is right near Namesti Republiky. It is a beautiful, recently-restored building, with a gorgeous cafe (have coffee there DEFINITELY). Another great place to eat, which is not that expensive, is Imperial, also near Namesti Republiky. It's full of locals and has great food. A bit more pricey is Slavia, also recently restored. It's right on the river at the end of Narodni Trida, and has beautiful views of the river and castle, and great coffee. All these places are perfect for absorbing Prague's atmosphere, people watching, reading the paper. Visit any of these places any time of day.You can take a tram or subway back to Vysehrad, it is very safe at night. Have a great time! I hope you get this before you leave...and if you have any questions let me know--I used to live in Prague.
