Evenings and a weekend day in Munich
 

For work I will be visiting Munich for two weeks in November. Not a great time of year for sight seeing especially in the evening but better than nothing. Any suggestions for places (other than beer gardens) to visit in the evening? Also would it be better to stay in Munich for my weekend day or visit Mad Ludwig's castles? Also would appreciate any restaurant suggestions. TIA.

I'll be watching the responses as I'll be in Munich late November for the beginning of 16 days in Germany and Austria. Trying to figure out what are some good ideas for the evenings too!!

I recently spent 2 weeks in Munich at a class and so only had the evenings and weekend free.

The Pinakothek (SP?) has 3 museums - Alte, Neue, and Modern. Each is open late a different night of the week. I managed to see a bit of all three in the evenings.

I also took a city walking tour one evening. It was organized by the Goethe Institute so I don't have a name for you but, I'm sure you could find a tour one evening.

Flat Tires has a tour and Munich is a great biking city. If you get a nice day on the weekend, that would be fun.

There are plenty of food halls and shops open until 7 pm. Head past Marienplatz toward Residenzplatz for Dallmayr and Brot und Butter.

Even if you are not a beer drinker, do get to the Hofbrauhaus or another beergarten. You can't really understand Munich culture until you experience this.

I had already visited Neuschwanstein so I skipped the bus trip and spent the weekend strolling Munich - I would check the weather. If it's sunny and clear go to the castles. If not, stay in Munich.

AGM - I wrote a book called "The Accountants Guide to Munich" that you might like.

Also - Fodor's has a great little book about Munich. That's what I used for my first visit.

The trip to the castles will be memorable but Munich has a LOT to offer as well. The art museums, the Deutsches Museum (technology) and a lot more. A fun (kind of sappy) evening is the Bavarian evening show every night at 7pm upstairs at the Hofbrau Haus. Have your hotel make reservations since this can fill up with tour busses. The Nymphenburger palace is a nice tour (don't miss the carraige house). If you are there in late Novemeber (after Thanksgiving) the Christmas markets will be open. Munich has several of them, the biggest at Marienplatz.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I will watch the weather and decide what to do on my weekend day based on that.

Bird- I am curious as to why you wrote "The Accountants Guide to Munich" and if it is one in a series? The Accountants Guide to Paris, to London, to Bora Bora?? What sort of things are covered in this volume?

AGM - I read Bird's book. It consisted of one page about wandering around the train station and eating at the Burger King.

We did an evening tour of the BMW plant that was very interesting. Also, I highly recommend the Spatenhaus for a great dinner.
