Evans Tour Question
 

Has anyone ever taken the Evans Tour (day tour) to Stonehenge and Bath? If so, how long did you spend in Stonehenge and how long in Bath? Do you recommend Evans?

I hadn't taken the Stonehenge/Bath tour with them.

But my husband and I did use them for the city tour 10 years ago. It was good. Our tour guide reminded me of Miss Jane from Beverly Hillbillies and she did a good job.

Sadly no one except we and another couple tipped the tour guide.

I gather you don't get to see much of Bath & some people reported leaving the tour in Bath & taking a train (at extra cost on their own) back to London.

If you're going in the summer when daylight is long (it stays light til 10 or 11 pm), I suggest checking into doing an inner circle tour at Stonehenge that allows you inside the ropes. Bath is an easy train trip from London. Stonehenge is more complicated but not impossible.

You can only get hyperlinks for a fodors address :) I open the thread I want to "hyperlink". I right click on the title, left click copy shortcut, then go to post my reply and press the CTRL and v key where I want the link to appear (although it won't be a hyperlink at that point). When you "post my reply" all Fodors urls appear as hyperlinks. There's no way to do that with "non=fodors links. You can also post the url by right clicking the title while still in the left frame (without opening the thread) but from there the link appears as a very long url.

As a contributer to that previous thread let me just summarize my view.

A bus tour allows you to do two things on the same day that would be very difficult otherwise. There are compromises. In my experience the time at Stonehenge was sufficient. The way to maximize your time in Bath is to RUN through the museum to get from the upper to the lower baths and then go explore the town for the rest of your time. The town & abbey are much more interesting IMHO.

We took the Evans Evans tour to Bath and Stonehenge last month. I thought we spent sufficient time at Stonehenge and limited time at Bath. We spent most of our time at the Bath Museum and did not have much time to explore other parts of the town nor the abbey. We spent a lot of time on the bus and if I were to do it all over again, I would take the train to Bath, grab a local bus tour to Stonehenge and spend more time in Bath. The Roman Bath Museum was interesting but I think I would not spend too much time there. I would rather explore the town and the abbey.

I forgot to respond on whether I would recommend Evans. It really depends on what you prefer. We went with a bigger bus thinking that it would work out better. We saw the Astral Travels mini van (16 people) while we were in Stonehenge and we wished we had taken that tour instead. It just seemed to be more personal, seats looked very comfortable and it was not cramped at all. They were at Stonehenge a lot earlier (they were leaving as we were arriving). Evans picked us up at our hotel and it was another hour until we hit Victoria Station where we transferred to another bus for Stonehenge and Bath. If we were to decide to take another bus tour, we would highly likely go with Astral Travels. If you do prefer the bigger buses (by the way, no restroom facilities in the bus like the coach buses in the U.S.), then Evans is a good company. Our tour guide was really good. I booked our tour through the hotel's concierge a couple of days before the trip but we also went in May which is not yet the height of tourist season.

..i would probably skip stonehenge and find a tour that just goes to bath..i found stonehenge rather disappointing..far too many people churning around in a circle..liked avebury much more
