That "news flash" appears to be pre-2002 - - those prices are in lira! In other words - - 51,000 (yes, thousand), which was about 26 dollars (or euro).

I think that 28 euro is the correct price, if that's what you read on the main trenitalia website.
Whoops, typo. 29, not 28.

Damn them using "." and not "," for 51,500. Yes that would have been pre-Euro times (hence Lira). Thanks a bunch Rex.

For all this unbelievable complicated advice, it would put anyone off using anything and take to walking. The prices in Italy for train travel went up on the 15th december 2002. Regarding the type of people in second class by one posting, well what a laugh you are, I used second class the whole month I was in Italy in november and december and met only delightful people on the trains, Americans on holiday, Italians who were unbelievably helpful, Austrians and Germans traveling north and south, all sorts that made for delightful memories.
I think too many post on this site who have never had first hand experience but picked it out of guide books and offer out of date misinformation.
It doesn't matter which train you use from Rome to Florence, it will still get you there in good time with wonderful scenery along the way.
I have found some guide books recently to be worth a miss. Just do it - have fun.
