Euros
Are Euros the accepted currency now in Greece and Italy? I know some EU countries are balking at using them. We're going there on a cruise in November and really don't want to be changing money at every port. Your input appreciated.

Yes.

Yes, since January 2002.

Both Italy and Greeece voted to accept the Euro several years ago and the currency replaced their national currencies last year, as noted above. You cannot use the old currency in these countries any longer (Although you can turn it in to a bank and get Euros in exchange if you have old currency left from previous trips.)
The only EU countries which I am aware have so far voted not to accept the Euro are the UK and Sweden (vote was just on Sunday). |
I thought Switzerland voted against the Euro as well....(?)

In addition to the UK and Sweden, Denmark does not use the Euro. Switzerland is not in the EU, and probably never will be. |
I guess I should have done my homework before my recent trip, but I did a daytrip from Italy to Locarno, Switzerland and was surprised to see all the prices in Swiss francs. Some places also had prices listed in Euros; the restaurant where I had lunch didn't, but they converted the bill to Euros for me and accepted Euros in payment.

Dick, you shouldn't have admited that. One of the Ugly American Police will be along to tell you that you should have never considered using another country's money.
