European Squares - Your Top Favorite Public Squares?
Europe is known for its many stately town squares, which are often the focal point of the whole city.
For whatever reason what are your favorite European town squares in which ti linger in?
I'll begin: (Top Ten - in no order)
LEIDESPLAIN, AMSTERDAM (Always great for people and tram-watching if not the best looking of square)
TRAFALGAR SQUARE, LONDON
ST PETERS SQUARE, VATICAN CITY
PLACE DE LA CONCORDE, PARIS
SAN MARCOS, VENICE (The most beautiful of all squares IMO)
PIAZZA NOVANA, ROME
COVENT GARDEN, LONDON
GROTE MARKT, BRUGES
MAIN SQUARE KRAKOW, POLAND (Can't recall anme)
TWIN PIAZZAS MAGGIORE & DEL NETTUNO, BOLOGNA.
ET TU? YOUR FAVORITE SQUARE, FOR WHATEVER REASON?

Prague's main square is still my favorite. I saw it again recently after visiting Poland. Wow! Krakow's square is quite amazing as well. Wroclaw and Gdansk also have very nice squares (Gdansk's is a "long square").
For smaller towns, Siena, Italy has a beautiful town square. The square in little Telc, Czech Republic is quite nice as well.

I presume you are using the term square loosely and mean the same thing as a plaza. That's interesting as I don't have any particular fondness for one in Paris. Ones I do really like that come to mind immediately:
main square, Prague
Rynek Glowny, Krakow
Wroclaw main square (Market SQ)
place Stanislas, Nancy, FR
place d'Horloge, Avignon, FR
place de la Comedie, Montpellier, FR
place du Capitole, Toulouse
plaza de Canovas del Castillo, Madrid

29FEB - that link don't work no more or at least not for me - I would like to see it - And Places des Voges in Paris could be a nice entry as well. Nancy's Stanislau Square yes now I remember it as being so so neat. Montpelier is about the only town in France I have not bopped around in except to change trains so that square that Christina mentions is one reason to go. Have been to Aigues Mortes but long ago so can't recall that but Aigues-Mortes is all in all one of my very favorite old towns in France.

Old Town Square and Wenceslaus Square in Prague.
Plaza Mayor in Madrid (not the square itself, but the mesones around and under the square).
Marienplatz in Munich.
Grote Markts in Brussels and Brugge.
Trafalgar Square in London...have always found it bustling and very lively.

PalenQ: Here's the correct link that 29FEB tried to post:

It's an earlier thread that you started on this subject.

I'm surprised that what has been called Europe's Drawing Room (for some weird reason I've heard it called that) - the Grand' Place in Brussels has not been mentioned. Though I have always found it rather nice there have always been cars parked in it when I was there - perhaps if the cars have been cleaned out if may be nicer - anyways the Grand' Place is often called Europe's finest public square.

another vote for Grand Place in Brussels. The way the light reflects off those buildings at night is mesmorizing.... couples making out, the smell of waffles nearby, love it.
my others would include:
Trafalgar Square- London
Rossio Square- Lisbon
Place de la Concorde- Paris
Place de Vendome- Paris
Vrijdagmarkt- Ghent
