Years ago I lived in France, and at that time most smokers smoked either Gauloises or Gitanes. I haven´t payed any attention if they still do. I don´t know about Italians. Perhaps Marlborough Lights.

Marlboro is the brand with the largest sales in France.

Gitanes and Gauloises were traditionnally made with french "brown" tobacco. The sales of this strong tobacco have plumetted during the last 20 years. Both brands now sale also cigarettes made with a milder american-style tobacco, and the traditionnal "gauloises" and "gitanes" are becoming more and more uncommon.

Clairobscur (as usual..) is absolutely right.
I would like to add that this shows how big time advertising is changing tastes worldwide, even in the field of cigarettes, although one of the most despised products in America. Philip Morris, Bud, Mc Donalds, Nike and others with bottomless war chests. You just can't stop them.
Bye bye Gauloises, adieu Gitanes.

I lived in Europe for about 10 years in the mid-60's/70's and can still smell and taste the Gauloises and Gitanes even though I gave up smoking many years ago. There was something very "French" about them then. Now I can't imagine every having inhaled anything that strong.

I love to smoke Gauloises. There is something distictly different about the taste. I crave a Gauloises; not just a cigarette.
They have a strong perfume in them, and leave a wonderful aftertaste. I love them, no matter how unhealthy.
