european skiiers: any chance of decent skiing this month?
Checking numerous/endless snow reports recently, I have no idea where the skiing actually MAY be bearable for intermediate skiiers.
is davos about the best snow place right now.. because of its height? If there is no new snow.. where would you recommend going? perhaps you can guide me to a better forum /website to see what is being said? thanks. |
Hi Lin - Check out Val Gardena in the Dolomites. It's snowing there right now ...
The webcams show snow in Ortisei - so at altitude it should be good. The websites say all runs & lifts are open: http://www.valgardena.it/?newlang=eng&pagid=4 http://www.val-gardena.com/?pagid=4&newlang=eng Hope this helps ... Steve |
looks like a big snowfall is coming spainīs way.. but we doubt it will suffice to fix up the runs.
will look into these you mentioned. thanks. have never skiied there.. just playing around with the idea.. problem is the airfare with easter so close.. and the low cost airlines charge for equipment, too.. |
Skiing station already closed in Lisbon

For snow, head north :)
Norway has several smaller ski resorts, most of which are less jet-setty than e.g. Zermatt, Davos, St. Moritz, Chamonix etc. Depends on what one's looking for of course. It also depends on what the definition of 'skiing' is. Cross-country or alpine? One of our (Norway) most family friendly resorts is Beitostolen - no english pages for some reason though yet. It has at the moment 180 cm of snow, green to black downhill pistes, 150 km of prepped & marked cross-country tracks including a world cup-track as well as an evening-time lit track. Possibly not within the area of interest though? |
My friend just came back from Avoriaz, France. It snowed every night and temperature was around 30F/-1C.
http://avoriaz.com/ski-holidays/ Its beautiful ski region and you can ski in France and Switzerland. |
Thanks so much for heads up on the french resorts as i had been "listening " to friends i thought knew the reports, and YOU are right.. they have had several inches of new snow recently!!
Thank you!! will keep my eye on them. we have skiied avoriaz, les arcs, and a few others.. but had understood there was no new snow in the french alps.. etc. etc.., so i didnīt even LOOK there. re: Norway. I would LOVE to go there one year, but spend a little more time and see more sights than just a resort. Also, the airfare is usually so much more to go that far from spain. |
lincasanova---I just posted your question on www.epicski.com. It's under "Resorts and Ski Conditions"; you can read without registering.
The EpicSki site is mainly directed toward NA skiing, but I have seen a few posts about Europe (one from someone who skied the Valle Blanche at Chamonix, and saw Glen Plake doing a film shoot). HOpefully someone may have an answer for you. If the thread drops off the first page, you may be able to find it under my name. |
onthesnow.com may also be useful but I don't think it has reports from Scandinavia unfortunately.
|
thank you enzian..will look for that question
and dukey.. i had seen that site before and found it very useful, but was focusing on switzerland.. for some reason. thanks a bunch. it is now snowing in northern spain, too, so MAYbe we need not go too far.. who knows. but..also seems the sun is going to come out and melt it all in a few days. |
lincasanova, check this site for snow conditions all over Europe:
http://www.j2ski.com/snow_forecast/Austria/index.html There are 20cm new snow in St Anton/Zurs |
I just received a newletter from Val Badia (in the Dolomites) saying they received 30 to 40 cm of new snow on Monday, March 19.
|
cool. thanks. this is getting so tempting.
|
Here's one of several websites for Val Badia, showing ski conditins and open lifts (all of them are).
http://www.altabadia.org/winter/impianti.asp?L=3 I've been there in the summer for hiking, staying in Colfosco. Friends of mine have skied there, and loved it. The new snow also fell on Val Gardena, recommended by Steve James, above. The two areas are just on opposite sides of Passo Gardena, so you could smaple both. I'm not sure which lies at the higher elevation. |
Plenty of snow on teh top 2/3 of the mountains in Zermatt, I've heard
