European Record Snowfall
I have heard on the new that Europe is experiencing a 50 year high in snow fall this year. I will be in Germany in 7 days and wondering if anyone has any suggestions as to how much snow I can expect in Munich/ Bavaria area? I will be traveling through Wurzburg, Munich and Fussen and then to Italy and am wondering if I should avoid Austria and travel through Switzerland to Italy via Milan instead or if either way is as wintery as the next.
Thanks,
Carol

On the same topic is Western Europe experiencing any fallout from La Nina, the counterpart to last years El Nino? Abnormal rain or cold temps?

Hi Carol

I live in Switzerland and we indead got a lot of snow in the last weeks. The danger of avalanches has been immense. However, the situation is getting more and more normal and it has at no time been a problem to cross Switzerland (by train!) from North to South of vice versa.

The Alps have indeed had an enormous amount of snow these last weeks, and the forecast says that there will be more snow by the end of this week, especially in Western Austria where there are still a few smaller villages isolated and where the danger of avalanches remains.
Bavaria seems to be the "safest" place at this moment, although you may expect 2 to 3 m of snow in the mountains.
I don't know if la Nina has something to do with it, but here in Northern Belgium it has started to rain end August and it has not stopped since then! We have had severe flooding in September and if it goes on like this, we will have flooding again in a few weeks!

Myriam, That is NOT what I wanted to hear!! I am starting my trip in Amsterdam with a few days in Brugge. I was assuming the days would be cool, but was hoping for some sunshine. In order to prepare myself, what do you advise? (We will be arriving there next week.) Will we be soaked with only street clothes? Do you advise rainboots as well? Email me directly if you'd like.
Thanks for your help.
