European Leaf Peeping
I think my husband and I will be going to Europe the end of Sept/early Oct. Not quite sure where we are headed yet tho Barcelona is a possibility. But I'm wondering if there are any other areas that may be especially lovely at that time of year. Are there parts of the Alps or maybe the Rhine Valley where the fall colors are very nice or is "leaf peeping" more of a U.S. event?

topping for suec1 because I would like to know too!

The fall foliage in the Dordogne is quite spectacular - maybe not on a par with New England, but certainly eye-popping.
It's funny, I wouldn't associate anywhere in Spain with foliage, but then, I've never been there in autumn. |
Actually, Paris is quite lovely in the Fall. We were surprised. I'm not quite sure why. Perhaps we've just forgotten since we moved to southern California years and years ago and the colors that change tend to do so between Thanksgiving and Christmas rather than Sept. and Oct.
I would think (in addition to the Dordogne) that Normandy and Burgundy would be spectacular. The grape vines turn colors as beautifully as the maples in New England. Napa and Sonoma Valleys in California are gorgeous in the Fall. Enjoy your trip. We'll be there in October and November, but in the south. |
Born and raised in New England makes for a tough judge, but I can say that the colors during the grape harvest in Provence are quite beautiful as well - think Napa/Sonoma Valley and you'll have an idea....

The Pyrenees are a wonderful place to see fall colors. We went in October and it was an impressive drive, teeming with color and wildlife. The extra bonus of course was that Barcelona and the Costa Brava was almost vacant.
