European Honeymoon

Hey All,

We want to go to Europe for our Honeymoon for 2 weeks next year, starting the 3rd week of June, 2013.

We were thinking Barcelona, Monte Carlo, Paris and a few cities in Italy including Bellagio. The more I am looking into it, the less feasible it seems. Alloting 2-3 days for each area we could probably only see 4 or 5 places.

Wondering what your thoughts were? Itinerary, mode of transportation (trains vs. cruise) etc..

We are very interested in Architecture and would love to see Versailles.

Any help you could offer would be greatly appreciated. Please feel free to ask any questions you'd like - I know this is pretty broad.

Thanks.

I think it's wonderful that you ask and seem open to the idea that you will be told to slow down. Most people come here, ask questions like yours, and then get miffed when everyone tells them not to attempt so much.

Paris should be on the very top of your list, since you seem most interested in it. Maybe Barcelona too, as you will enjoy seeing the works of Gaudi.

I would say that Monte Carlo is out. Not fascinating architecturally, and just really expensive.

How about Barcelona, somewhere historical and architecturally fascinating, like perhaps Avignon, and then finish is Paris?

From Barcelona, you could travel eastward and base somewhere, and tour an area, such as the Luberon, or if you love art, head to the French Riviera and the many great art museums and designated artists' museums. While there, you could visit Monte Carlo. Again, end in Paris.

You could fly in to BCN, and out of Paris, on an open jaws ticket, thus saving on air and transport costs.

I would say 4 nights in Barcelona (one day for jet lag)
5 nights in southern France (use a car for this part)
5 nights Paris (if it seems a lot add a day trip to Chartres as well as one to Versailles)

You could really see a lot and relax and enjoy some of it, too.

Save Italy for another trip.

No cruise. That's just my opinion, but I would never cruise in southern Europe where everything on the ground is so fascinating and the food is great. I might cruise in Norway.

Tuscan's plan looks good.

I had to remind myself where Bellagio was.

You could do a Florence, Venice, Sienna trip of 5 days each, one language to deal with short transport time between etc and great architecture along the way and water involved in one.

Another alternative would be Paris, Strasbourg, Rheims again close together, one language and great architecture.

and finally Paris, Toulouse, Barcelona. People ignore Toulouse. http://www.uk.toulouse-tourisme.com/...l/index_en.php is the site aimed at the UK.

NO CRUISE.

Cruises are for eating a lot and seeing as little as possible. Waste of time and money if you want to see and experience whatever place you're traveling to.

Other than liking architecture and believing that you want to get jammed up in the preposterous Disney World-sized crowds that flood Versailles, what interests you about Europe and what do you really want out of the vacation? There are many architecturally interesting places and styles throughout Europe and defining what architecture interests you would also help (Classical? Gothic? Baroque? Modern socialistic heinous from Le Courbusier?).

2 or 3 days is not enough for Paris or Barcelona. If you go to Versailles that's 1 day out of your Paris time, leaving 1 or 2 days to explore an entire wonderful city with diverse architecture.

Bellagio is not a city - it is a very small town.

Agree with tuscan's plan and agree to avoid cruises as you will see very little of any place you dock.

if you want your honeymoon to be a relaxing one, then try and limit yourself to only 3 destinations. Resist the urge to relocate at all costs. (The urge will be GREAT!) Regardless of where you go, i would advise keeping Paris the final stop of your journey. It's plenty romantic and unlikely to be surpassed by other cities

I'll add my vote for tuscanlifeedit's plan - minus the day trips from Paris (at least don't plan on any until you're actually there and can honestly say to yourself "I've seen enough of Paris - time to get out of town").

I also like the idea of saving the best (i.e. Paris) for last.

The open-jaw flight (into BCN home from CDG) is a must.

Two weeks in Italy would be more of my personal idea of a honeymoon. I found Venice to be heart wrenchingly beautiful and there is something very sensual about the Tuscan air. I know this is the Paris forum, but that's my point of view....

I would omit Barcelona, not romantic enough for a honeymoon in my opinion - it would make a nice visit for another vacation.
I would go to Paris, Bellagio area which is on Lake Como - really beautiful breath-taking scenary, without doubt Venice, and a few days in Tuscany to enjoy the beautiful countryside and visit some of its medieval towns or cities. Alternatively omit Tuscany and head to the French Riviera if that is your preference. I would use low cost airline - Ryan Air or Easyjet - to travel from Paris to French Riviera (airports in Nice, Genoa, etc) or to Venice or a tuscan city which has an airport, like Pisa.

When you decide on your destinations, then I am sure many fodorites will give you their recommendations on the itinerary.

If you decide that you want to visit Barcelona, you can still use low cost airlines from there to Paris and to various cities in Italy.

Good for you, NS.

With 2 weeks you could have a very nice honeymoon
a: Paris
b: Paris and (Alsace, or Burgundy or the Dordogne)
c: Barcelona and Paris.
d. Barcelona and Venice
e. Venice and Paris

Enjoy your visit.

I agree with the previous comment. Just choose 2 cities and have a wonderful and relaxing honeymoon at the same time!
Top destinations from your list would be Paris and Venice, as these 2 cities are by far the most romantic. Paris has SO much to offer, and Venice is just unique in every way...although quite expensive as well.
