European Geography Quiz - #1 - Longest Rivers?

HOW WELL DO YOU KNOW EUROPE FROM A GEOGRAPHICAL STANDPOINT?

The first question:

Name Western Europe's Top Ten Longest Rivers

(Russia and former Soviet Republics not included; rivers must originate inside an E U country or Norway and Switzerland, etc that are surrounded by EU countries)

How many of the Top Ten Longest Rivers can you name.

Don't look it up - just make a guess. Answers will be posted several hours later.

Padraig Nov 19th, 2014 07:15 AM

Like or not, Pal, the Volga is a European river.

Your restriction is bizarre.

PalenQ Nov 19th, 2014 07:26 AM

Paddy - I try to make it something most folks will know about - there are so many long rivers in say the old Soviet lands that most never heard of. Just trying to have some fun.

Like ten of the longest 'European' rivers are in Russia or other areas once under Soviet control and the Volga was the only one I had ever heard of.

Could have said western Europe or originates in western Europe I guess.

tower Nov 19th, 2014 07:45 AM

Danube, Rhine, Arno, Oder, Tisza, Ebro, Vistula, Rhone, Elbe, Loire

Second tier would possibly have The Dordogne and the Liffey

tower Nov 19th, 2014 07:49 AM

Second tier, also Thames and Aare

I agree with Padraig, how could you leave out Ukraine and Russia (Dnepr, Volga, Don)

tower Nov 19th, 2014 07:59 AM

Pal..do you stay up late at night thinking up these little pop quizzes? Then again, what the hell is there to do at that hour in ROSCOMMON???
Are you buried in snow yet? Temps here went down to 60 during the night...will be mid 70's today in Ojai where I live. Ho hum!

PalenQ Nov 19th, 2014 08:04 AM

Yes we are buied in snow and to break the tedium...plus I live surrounded by woods - nice to look at but mpossible to walk in - I'm getting my snow shoes out today though.

John Nov 19th, 2014 09:50 AM

Shouldn't this discussion be on the lounge??

PalenQ Nov 19th, 2014 09:57 AM

To end this fiasco which had good intentions here are the Ten Longest rivers in non-Soviet Europe:

Danube 1,780 mi
2- Rhine 768
3- Elbe 678
4- Tagus 645
Loire 627
Meuse (Mosel) 575
ebro 570
Duoro 557
Oder 531
Rhone 505
Seine 482

ca y/est!

Dukey1 Nov 19th, 2014 10:24 AM

"what the hell is there to do at that hour in ROSCOMMON???"

EASY: getting YOUR attention, Tower <G>

adrienne Nov 19th, 2014 11:15 AM

This quiz is rigged since there are 11 rivers in the answer and the title only requested 10 rivers. Who's moderating this thread?

And no...this thread cannot be in the Lounge because most of the best people are on the Europe board.

PalenQ Nov 19th, 2014 12:17 PM

the Lounge is only open to a select few Fodorgarchs talking about the latest celebrity gossip, their own or relatives or friends illnesses, how much they hate Obama or Hillary or all Republicans - pure pablum.

Yup this is the Europe board - does it say only European Travel - I think having a knowledge of Europe on many facets makes one a better informed traveler - I never got why some would post 'shouldm't this be in the Lounge' - why take time to say that - just ignore the thread and let others have their fun plus the Lounge is a closed shop these days shrinking by the day as folks get banned, die or leave Fodors - there can be no replacements thus it is a dying entity.

Padraig Nov 19th, 2014 01:09 PM

We can't allow the Oder: it't doesn't satisfy the arbitrary rules. Nor the Elbe. Or if they are in, then the Vistula should be allowed.

Cowboy1968 Nov 19th, 2014 01:24 PM

Pal had excluded the former Soviet Republics - not the whole former East Bloc.
Thus Oder/Odra, Elbe/Labe are in as neither Poland nor Czech had been part of the USSR.

Cowboy1968 Nov 19th, 2014 01:31 PM

P.S... I had to google Tagus cause I was sure that there was no such river in Europe.
FYI.. since the last Romans died a few centuries ago, that river is called Tejo or Tajo.
And none of these waters is measured in miles, btw.

PalenQ Nov 19th, 2014 01:45 PM

And none of these waters is measured in miles,>

nautical miles?

Padraig Nov 19th, 2014 02:17 PM

The rule is "western Europe or originates in western Europe". Hence rivers that rise in central Europe and flow through central or eastern Europe ar not allowable. There is also an arguable case to be made against the Danube.

The English name for the Tejo is Tagus.

tower Nov 19th, 2014 02:20 PM

OK, time to pony up, Pal..I got 7 out of 10 (70%)...without the slightest cheating. Don't I get a prize???

Dukey..if you've ever been to Roscommon deep in the heart of Michigan, you'd understand. They fold up the whole town at 8:00 pm. I think Pal is on the folding committee.

Cowboy1968 Nov 19th, 2014 02:42 PM

Pal.. nope, waterways on the continent are measured in kilometers, not mls or nautical miles.
Only distances on the open sea are calculated in nm. Or for aircraft navigation.

PalenQ Nov 19th, 2014 04:12 PM

Ah the snow continues to tumble down... cabin fever sets in!

Look for a new Geo Euro Quiz Tomorrow!

IMDonehere Nov 19th, 2014 05:55 PM

Joan Rivers-sorry she's dead and an American

Pepper_von_snoot Nov 19th, 2014 08:14 PM

Wrong about Tagus (Tejo in Portuguese).

It is called Tagus by English speakers, just like Firenze is called Florence.

My ex-husband's parent's house looks out over the Tagus in Lisboa.

If you read Fernando Pessoa's Book of Disquiet in English, you would notice the Tagus plays an important role in the life of Bernardo Soares.

Fernando Pessoa is Portugal's greatest writer.

That's interesting - you learn a new thing every day.
One of the place names I had never heard (or seen written) in its English variant.
Would you pronounce it Latin or "Tay" (rhymes with May) "Gus" (like Uncle Gus)?

asps Nov 19th, 2014 09:36 PM

Po river in northern Italy is 652 kms. long and was omitted from the list. Makes me wonder if there are other omissions.

Mainhattengirl Nov 19th, 2014 09:56 PM

I think you forgot the Main River, which is 527 km.

asps Nov 19th, 2014 10:13 PM

Well, the Inn river flows into the Danube, but at 510 kms would make the list on its own.

PalenQ Nov 20th, 2014 12:46 PM

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...Longest_rivers

Here's the list I referenced - says Po is 427 or so km and does not list the Inn (maybe I missed it?) - forgot to check the Main.

PalenQ Nov 20th, 2014 12:49 PM

Main
River in Germany
The Main is a river in Germany. With a length of 527 km, it is the longest right tributary of the Rhine, and the longest river lying entirely in Germany. Wikipedia
Length: 327 miles (527 km)
Discharge: 7,063 ft³/s (200 m³/s)
Mouth: Rhine
Source: Upper Franconia
Cities: Frankfurt, Würzburg, Offenbach, Aschaffenburg, Hanau

Wel the Main should be on the list but could not see it - I got the above from Wiki too!

Main is the longest river entirely in Germany.

PalenQ Nov 20th, 2014 12:50 PM

Inn
River in Europe
The Inn is a river in Switzerland, Austria and Germany. It is a right tributary of the Danube and is 517 kilometres long. The highest point of its drainage basin is the summit of Piz Bernina, at 4,049 metres. Wikipedia
Length: 321 miles (517 km)
Discharge: 25,780 ft³/s (730 m³/s)
Source: Swiss Alps
Mouth: Danube
Cities: Innsbruck, Mühldorf, Wasserburg am Inn, Braunau am Inn, Simbach am Inn, Rosenheim, Landeck, Waldkraiburg, Neuötting
Countries: Austria, Germany, Switzerland

Well the Inn should have been Inncluded at well - so much for the list or my perusal of it several times looking for Main and Inn.

Now for the Po

asps Nov 22nd, 2014 09:39 AM

Well, I was probably wrong as you were giving lenghts in miles while I was giving them in kms

PalenQ Nov 23rd, 2014 08:38 AM

Well I used miles because most Americans, who dominate this site, are used to them rather than kilometers but this is a pertual confusing problem - in Europe everything of course as it is in the rest of the world - in kilometers and metric system not our old English based folish system of miles, pints, gallons, cups, tons, etc.

nochblad Nov 24th, 2014 10:50 AM

Western Europe - non Soviet Europe

Your definitions are imprecise.

Much of the Danube flows through Eastern Europe.

Does this make it a Western Europe river?

PalenQ Nov 24th, 2014 11:05 AM

(Russia and former Soviet Republics not included; rivers must originate inside an E U country or Norway and Switzerland, etc that are surrounded by EU countries)

the Danube qualified under my rubric because its source is in western Europe as per instructions - not that this was not a flawed instruction just that no one would know most of the longer rivers from say Finland, Belorussia, Russia, etc.

nochblad Nov 24th, 2014 11:23 AM

You may upset the Finnish.

laverendrye Nov 24th, 2014 03:07 PM

Pal Q

The Meuse (Maas in Dutch) is not the Mosel (Moselle in French) as your list indicates. They are two quite distinct rivers.

Also it's the Douro, not the Duoro.

And what about the Vistula? It rises in Poland, an EU country, and drains into the Baltic still in Poland. At 651 miles in length, it should be fourth on your list.

PalenQ Nov 25th, 2014 08:45 AM

Thanks for the correctos laverenrye!
